You should defintely show 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown'. It is such an informative, entertaining, insightful film. I would second 'The Last Waltz' and even suggest any of the 'Jools Holland' dvds as they have some cracking performances. For a more humourous take 'A Mighty Wind' is a good laugh and 'Spinal Tap' is great. And in terms of music being a major theme within a movie - 'Almost Famous' and 'High Fidelity'.

"I amtrying to break your heart" wilco docu by Sam Jones, the argument over the mixing is the greatest scene i've ever seen in a music documentary

oh two more "Scratch" excellent movie on roots of hip hop and "Before The Blues" documentary by Scorcese, think its in 7 parts, and while not all are great some are definitely worth showing, someone has my copy so i cant remember all the names but standout ones are the one which Scorcese directs himself, the one about Chess Records (n' hip hop) and the British Blues Scene

I thought 'Soul of a Man' by Wim Wenders was the standout of that series.

yeah a good recent documentary, i think, is DIG. it follows a band named the brian jonestown massacre and shows there part to play in the rise an fame of bands like the dandy worhols and brmc. its one of those documenteries that makes you feel like this band would be the greatest band in the world if they could just keep their s**t together

Yes, it was, to be fair, they were all excellent and any preference is just personal choice. Found the british one started slow and then really got going, brilliant.

the best one I have seen by miles is 'Westway To The World'. Its a documentary on the Clash made by Don Letts and released in 1999 I think. Great interviews and some great old footage of the band playing live and just larking around. There is one a saw a few years ago on TV called 'A Message To Love', its all about the Isle Of Wight Music Festival, the year The Who were on the bill I think, its really great but I dont think it is on general release, I tried for ages to track down a copy but it is out of print. SHould show it if ya can get yer mitts on a copy.

actor/director d**kie Rude has made a documentary about Joe Strummer called 'Lets Rock Again'. Its only had a few screenings last year in the US and the general cinema/DVD release has been delayed apprently cause of an argument over the licence to the music on the movie. Its supposed to be really great judging from the reports in the US that Ive heard. Its all based around the last tour of the US he did with The Mescaleros, part road movie/part documentary. Cant wait to see that myself.

my vote also goes to Feat And Loathing. I think showing movies in bars/clubs can be a bit dodgy. I would prefer to have the movies as background visuals and the usual tunes playing on the soundsystem or whatever. Having the dialogue from movies can be a bit disconcerting, whereas I can think of nothing better than kicking back in a bar with some good music playing and fear and loathing playing on the big screen. Or other visually intesting documentaries or music: Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Waynes World, Dogtown and The Z Boys etc.

yeah, that's the one. Stacy Peralta, the guy who made it has another one about big wave surfing called 'Riding Giants' which is just SO good. And Larry Clarke (the GOD himself) has a new flick in the works about skater kids called Wassup Rockers. Keep your ear to the ground for that one. Dogtown is one of the best documentaries on skating out there, it's just dealt with so brilliantly. I'd recommend anyone even with a passing interest in skating or skate culture to check it out. A movie is actually being made of Dogtown and the Z Boys which is kind of weird. it's called 'Lords of Dogtown' and is out in the States in June. The BBC did this cool doc in the 70's on skating and surfing too. Cant remember what it was called, but it was Dogtown era stuff, saw it late at night on TV a few weeks ago.

I'd have to vote for Scratch as well. Dogtown and Z-Boys and Riding Giants are both class but my favourite sports documentary is When We Were Kings.

Definitely the WILCO documentary. Its very interesting, quality music and has some funny bits aswell. Argument between Jay Bennet and Jeff Tweedy is comical. Actually, Jay Bennet turns out to be the star of the show before they kick him out. "I think we need to beef up my tone a bit", amazin!

From the suggestions in this thread I discovered 'Buena Vista Social Club', 'End Of The Century: The Story Of The Ramones', 'Scratch' and 'Dogtown And Z-Boys'. All were really excellent. I'm looking forward to the Flaming Lips one now and will try to get the one on Wilco. Will the Temple Bar Music Centre be showing some of these? If so, when?

i heard the metallica one is supposed to be very good too. Haven't seen it and not a fan, (Lars Ullrich has to be the biggest gimp in rock!) but it is supposed to be very entertaining, and there are plenty of Metallica fans about...
