Since its coming up to xmas, and more money comes into hand, does anyone have any good tips on new acts? What shows are not to be missed? What Eps-Albums should be picked up? Or even any big releases from mainstream artists to watch out for?

im mad looking for more sean tyrell stuff, if you dont own belladonna but consider yourself a fan of the singer songwriter genre thing then hang your head in shame and get it right now and if you still have respect for the other singer writers of the land then you have bricks for brains! just kidding, but it is very very very very good. four verys. thats saying something.

You should be able to find the Soviet Filter's EP in Road and Tower. I'd be remiss if I didn't pimp the Wrens as well. Gravenhurst's mini EP is worth getting as well.

Gotta second Alcopop with his choice of Postal Service. Their album 'Give up' is one of the best I've come across this year. A gem. With some utterly brilliant lyrics. eoghan

Engineers 'Folly': Brilliant 6-track mini album. A welcome return to the Big Music infused with the ghost of Kevin Shields. Ray Lamontagne 'Trouble': Saw this guy on Later a couple of weeks back. In a word: mindblowing. When people first heard and saw Bob Dylan, THIS must have been what it felt like. He's 31, chronically shy and has only now found the confidence to perform in front of people. It's been worth the wait.Note to the Whelans lock-in crowd: this is how it is meant to be done..... Interpol: 'Antics' Gets better with every listen. Richmond Fontaine: 'Post To Wire' Americana doesn't get any better than this. American Music Club: 'Love Songs For Patriots' NOTHING is better than this!!!!

Actually, it doesn't get any worse. For real Americana - Willard Grant Conspiracy's greatest hits.

Gotta disagree with Klootfan on The Constantines - an album so bad I had to take it off my iPod for fear of the random track selection picking any of their songs from 8 days of music.

I second that emotion.....Jape are fabulous and Richie Egan wins the 'Nicest Person in the World 2004' award hands down!....and before anyone asks or asssumes...no I don't know or manage Jape....I'm not a friend with an agenda....they/he makes truly beautiful, atmospheric music and they are great live..very entertaining and wayyy too modest

I saw him open for David Kitt in whelans in the summer and thought he was completely crap (mainly becasue I didn't think he could sing, and once again, I was at a Kittser gig), but I've got to admit that the bits from the album that I've heard I really like. Meanest thing anyone wrote about Jape that I've seen was something along the lines of "Richie Egan plays bass for the instrumental Redneck Manifesto, after listening to this it's obvious why they are instumental". So is that a recomendation from me or not? I'm not sure myself, probably a thumbs up.

He reminds me a bit of Damon Gough...aka Badly Drawn Boy...hang on..hang on..I mean it in the best possible way...let me justify: I'm not a huge BDB fan and he doesn't have the best voice in the world..but his singing matches his music, I think..it's introspective, subtle and soothing. Like BDB, I reckon Richie's voice suits the kind of music he's doing...it's perfect for the understated, well crafted songs he's playing. It's certainly not all quiet and lo-fi by any means, but I like it..you have to listen with attention and it draws you in. He's charismatic in a non-cocky way (BDB on the otherhand has his moments) I love seeing somebody really enjoying themselves on stage and looking totally comfortable and at home...un-selfconscious. The band look like they are really enjoying themselves too...for a change. Was listening to 'Hour of the Bewilderbeast' again last night...haven't heard it in about a year..forgot what a lovely record it is...I was smiling away to myself

jape are good alright, though i have to say not too pushed on his voice and i do think their best moments are the instrumental bits. look out for 66e's album (www.66earehome.com) it'll be out fairly soon hopefully, it really is fantastic.

Well in fairness, had I known that there was an award I would have made more of an effort. I bought the album on Friday night, played it on Saturday morning, played it again on Saturday evening and now I'm playing it again. So I guess that means that I'm really digging it. It's hard to describe what I'm getting from it but it's just really f**king good. And there was no need to qualify that comment, I really like BDB.

His 70s stuff leaves me cold: his 90s stuff is brilliant. New album is poor, though; reviewed it a while back. ...thanks for the list, lots of good ideas for stuff to check out.

Yep, Clive Barnes after reading Rev Jules' review on this site. Wicker, I'm broke as a joke at the moment but hopefully I will be coming into some cash over next few weeks. Most of them I will have to order in but I plan on getting them over the space of about a month. Aidan, cheers for all that. I have been hunting doen some of Richman's stuff but they all seem very dear at the mo. Is his solo stuff better than with The Modern Lovers?

his solo stuff is exactly like the songs he plays in 'there's something about mary', so if you like those songs you should like his solo stuff. I saw 'I'm so confused' in the bargain racks of tower records above easons on o'connell street for less than a tenner; his other solo records are probably only available via internet.
