Now I don't mean bands like Razorlight and say The Kooks; the kind of bands most people round here would probably dislike. (I don't mind The Kooks that much at all, but that's beside the point)

It's just I can't stand the Flaming Lips. I hate their crappy songs, I hate the way they're 'wacky', I hate the singer's smug face. When they come on the radio I swiftly change the station. And I like decent stuff, I think.

So does anyone really not like any bands that are generally fairly well received? Like say The National, or Elbow? Or Hard-Fi? Ahem.

I dunno if this counts, but...

    Muse.

Pseudo intellectual rock for over serious people who bleat on about real music, when in reality, they only difference between them and The Darkness, is that they aren't in on the joke.

Flaming Lips have one fantastic album - 'The Soft Bulletin'. Magical. 'Yoshimi' has some great tunes bt isn't great as an album overall. Their early stuff is quite hit and miss too. Live though, they're wonderful.
    Are U2 respectable? Because they're f**king evil.

    Muse blow goats.

I can't believe how big this excuse of a band are.

My choice; Aphex Twin. I find him unlistenable.

..and deliberately so in some cases. Fawning fanboys will point out that thats just part of what makes him a prankster genius, whatever, I don't have time for self indulgent crap. However he has put out some good stuff, "selected Ambient works 85-92" is worth a spin and there once was a time when he even released fairly straight up dancefloor techno that could have been played in Ibiza.

Muse: have you ever noticed that the boring self indulgent plonker at a party is always a muse fan?

New trendy British Bands: ALL OF THEM....anybody photographed with geldof spawn, pidgeon whatsits, kooks, razor sh*te...all that skinny boys who look like girls brigade...crap. Go back to working in TOPMAN.....

Tings tings, FLAS, HamSandwich....blah blah...boring nonsence..just because you wear headbands and second hand clothes doesnt mean your music is any good.

The Smashing Pumpkins: God awful tripe the first time round. Cheer up Bill, life is ok!

Joy Division: the greatest myth....New order were far better.

Will I get in an awful lot of trouble if I say Radiohead? Don't get what the big deal is, and SO many people think its sacrilege if they don't rule your life. Take a listen to Wilco instead, now theres a band to follow for a lifetime.

Poor old Billy does seem to have not gotten over his dog getting knocked down or something or other, but ignore the lyrics, and that "Today" tune and the rest of Siamese Dream ROCKS in an old school sort of way.

I'd agree, Ian Curtis was great, but the band was in its infancy and got better.

    OK, but why?

I can kinda let you away with most of that list, but the Beach Boys need serious justification. Pet Sounds is a bit over-rated alright, but come on, what about the early stuff, 409, little deuce coupe, I get around, all that early surf rock / rock n roll stuff. I kinda think if that doesn't make you smile, you're a bit humorless?

Hmmmm, if they don't make me smile so be it..just don't like their music ..but to be honest I have quite a limited knowledge of their music (thankfully). What I have heard makes me feel slightly queasy- all that weird, saccharine high-pitched harmonising from grown men on 'surfing USA' and 'Californian Girls'-just always found it quite odd.

While I'm at it, what's the deal with Elbow. The worst-named band in rock history have done nothing interesting since 'New Born' and 'Asleep In The Back' back in 2001 or whenever. Don't get it.

Hmmm Ive recently thrown a few classic hits from the beach boys onto my Ipod, namely 'Help me Rhonda' & 'Youre so good to me'. Diggin them in the good weather.
Also the new Elbow album is instantly impressing me unlike Asleep In The Back did

"The Modfather" WTF!!!???? kind of like calling Kobain the godfather of grunge...

Both arrived years after the style evolved and was made popular by other people...

Weller is to British Music as Guineys is to clothes....Cheap Imitation

Snooze Patrol. are they respected? probably not. Still terrible.

I'm not sure if any of these are respected but I just can't see the attraction with the following:

Arctic Monkeys - Schoolboy lyrics/boring music
Arcade Fire - Interesting first album followed by an album of Prefab Sprout covers
Crystal Castles - Maybe I'm just getting old, but seriously, has anyone actually listened to them?
Bruce Springsteen - Is he not just America's answer to Christy Moore?

U2- Passengers was the last decent record. Bono is self indulget self righteous middle class middle aged twirp who wants to plant a spaceship over temple bar. The edge is nothing without delay. Useless music. History will not be kind.
The frames- some great songs but deep as a puddle, singer doesnt seem to have any other style other than the trademark tortured soul of a spurned lover.
Muse - overproduced, over serious. Great riffs though.
Arcade fire - no soul, dire lyrics, fake emotional performance.
    Paddy Casey- eejit.
    Kila- Bad trad.
Fionn Regan - What the feck is the difference between this wannabe and any other misguided tool with a guitar in Dublin/London? PR? Nice clothes? Are people mad? Do they not hear?
Gemma Hayes- fairly weak, would be hard pressed to listen to an entire CD. Wierd but lovely voice in places.
Bell X1 - terrible lyrics, over produced, dont get it. Annoying. Very very annoying.
REM - for a long time now. Be honest.
    Josh Ritter - why? what?
Deloretos - torterous listening. Worse to watch on stage. Pretentious rich kids with great record collections but no clue of how to make great music.
Kings of Leon - boring boring boring.

There are so many great acts out there, only evil marketing and the ignorant masses can explain how most of the above have their jobs. Just like MacDonalds burger flippers.
Serious question: where are the mad Irish musicians? Are they all working in the IFSC? Touring Oz?...where?! We havent had a great this decade yet. We used to be so good at making mad people who made great music. Do we just make celtic pups and kittens now?

Whether or not they are considered respectable, they've recieved a lot of hype and press attention - I don't get it - they're crap - recycled white boy funk injected with schoolboy humour that's more dumb than funny.

Hahaha! I f**king hate that band with a vengance.. we played with them in Sligo.. basically a hometown gig for half the band - we were promised a few quid to cover petrol money for the ones who'd to travel from Dublin - most of the people who were there, we knew & despite that, at the end of the gig, when I went looking for the cash, I was told "you'll have to speak to our manager". When I asked where HE was I was told "In Dublin - here's his number". Shower of snotty c**ts... rich kids? No wonder - the rip-off s**tebags.

Primal Scream - over rated jakey indie-disco dance tosh.

White Stripes - Sound like a school band playing AC/DC b-sides.

The National - The singer's voice reminds me of a depressing history teacher I had in 3rd year.

The Stone Roses - over rated jakey indie-disco dance tosh.

Bruce Springsteen - Sounds like he's having a s**te when he sings.

Pink Flyod - Wake me up when they've finished.

    Bonny Prince Billy - WHY?

Editors - One band I would actually enjoy murdering.

99% of Irish bands - Top of the list at the moment are Coronas.

Manic Street Preachers - Piss poor pub rock.

Pearl Jam - Raaaaawk. Nuff said.

Nirvana - The most over rated band since The Beatles.

starbelgrade you bring up some excellent mentions! some i disagree with, but it's all about perspective...I get really annoyed reading rave reviews of average Irish bands...I will miss mongrel...sniffle ;L)
my favorite irish band of recent years was Soviet Filter, and they broke up for some reason.
Bonnie prince Billy inspires the funniest reactions from both sides of that arguement, I like alot of the stuff to be honest.

Is it ok to say the killers? I ask simply cos I am unsure if they are respected or not. "Tranquilize" and "Jenny..." are great songs, driven by the bass, but the rest is boooooring.

Yeah - Soviet Filter were pretty good. The singer was working with Gizzy D from Analogue Mindfield a while back, but I'm not sure if anything came of it.

Bonny Prince seems to be a musical equivalent Marmite alright!

As for Killers - I quite like them... not a mad fan or anything, but they write decent enough pop tunes. "Tranquilise" is a savage tune though, it has to be said. The mix of vox & melodies with Lou Reed really works for me.

The Stone Roses - over rated jakey indie-disco dance tosh.

Editors - One band I would actually enjoy murdering.

99% of Irish bands - Top of the list at the moment are Coronas.

Manic Street Preachers - Piss poor pub rock.

    Totally Agreed

And adding to todays list - Soungarden and Rage Against the Machine and The Fucking Blizzards. Oi! No!

Stone Roses and RATM..are you guys from the planet Warped Ear?
