Whether you're into their music or not, you cant doubt they are two bands that are actually doing things and getting places at the mo - compared to a hoard of other Irish bands that have been around for the same time or even longer.....

Well said - I don't really know Ham Sandwich, but FLA definitely have more than national appeal. They're the first Irish band in a long, long time that have had even a modicom of success outside Ireland... and that's purely on the back of the release of 1 EP.

You don't hear the likes of Delorentos, Future Kings of Spain, Blizzards, Flaws etc etc doing live sessions on BBC radio? And why's that.. same reason most Irish bands start out & end up never gaining international success.. their local bands with purely local appeal.

Like 'em or not, FLA have a very bright future & a style of music & presentation that'll catch on in a hell of a lot more countries.

Fair points and fair dues to them....I reckon they will last an album at most personally..the fad will pass until the next one.....

songs are boring and quite frankly, "Lend me your face"...absolutely shocking........listen i dont deny that loads of folk like them and they'll do deadly in the UK....but then lots of crap is doing reallly well too......

I think both groups are awful and I think in 18 months neither will matter. It wouldnt matter if they were from NYC or London or the quirkiest coolest hip avant garde area in the world...I just think they are brutal...

Future Kings of Spain are a great band, as are Delorentos... The reason they arent getting anywhere in UK is the same reason Winehouse, Doherty and that spade of feminine bloke tenneager types are cleaning up at the NMES etc.....
    Its not in fashion...

Delorentos main problem is that they try WAY too hard to be fashionable, but haven't paid much attention to changes in fashion since they started out. They sound like last years british indie. Don't know mucha bout FKOS, but if Tom Dunne loves them, they're probably s**te.

As for Doherty & Winehouse.. both of them released excellent albums last year, so their success in non too surprising.

And "Lend Me Your Face" is a classic.

We'll just agree to differ so?

Come to think of it, I saw FKOS at the HWCH festival the year we played it. Let's continue to agree to disagree! (As I did at the time with my drummer... we're polar opposites 90% of the time when it comes to musical taste).

"Delorentos main problem is that they try WAY too hard to be fashionable" - don't agree with this, they're just a great band with great strong songs. Regarding success elsewhere, they've played a rake of shows in the UK, Europe, US...

FLApes are one of the best new bands in the world at the moment, never mind Ireland.

FLApes are pretty much everything I could hope for from a new indie band, produced a few decent EPs, are interesting and entertaining. As for world beating status? Too early, who knows, or cares?

I fear they're getting a little formulaic, I'm growing a little tired of their music which is a shame becasue they really excited me a year ago. Unless they shake things up they may run out of ironic TV figures to namecheck. Will be interested in in hearing the album though.

"SB (!)"... I drink & smoke far too much to be on a "v healthy" list & I don't think Ham Sandwich should be there either until they clarify what type of bread they use & if they use a low fat spread instead of butter.

Operator Please are one trick ponies. Have been listening to their album a lot, there's one good song on it.

I'm not hyping Fight Like Apes beyond what I see as their reality, I'm stating my opinion. Listening to what is probably dozens of new acts every week, FLApes are the only ones who I personally think are worth an awful lot both musically on record and live. I would say this if they were from any part of the world, not just our doorstep.

Regarding "world beating status" I didn't say they were going for the EU presidency or anything, I just said they're one of the best new bands in the world. Which, IMO they are.

    Hello everyone.

Have to say I agree mostly with everything PARTON says. There's very little good music around Ireland these days and most of the bands 'making waves' aren't good enough to actually warrant any measure of success. Bands like the aforementioned Delorentos and Ham Sandwich, as well as many others, all make perfectly acceptable indie rock (with whatever trimmings of electro, metal or funk is deemed hip at the time). It seems to me like a lack of ambition when it comes to making a proper album - A 'play it safe' mentality, and we're left with nothing exceptional or memorable.

FIght Like Apes may be on BBC radio, but that fact doesn't make their music good. I personally find their music appalling.

Despite my pessimistic attitude, I do believe and have seen there are good Irish acts out there. I just hope they get the heap of success they deserve.

I'll second that. They get a massive amount of air play on triple J, to the extent that their album was a feature album for a week. After that week I had listened to all the operator please I could handle (unless the alternative was Ben Lee)

Channel One, Chakras and Noise Control come to mind straight away. Ilya K aren't bad either. Kybosh are alright. Their last single was a bit poo, but a lot of their other stuff is quite good. I'd say my own band, but I'm not that conceited yet.

But if any of the first three became successful it'd make me happy.

Wouldn't be my cuppa - the recordings aren't the best either, but Electra's a cheap spot & band recordings are very difficult to do really well unless your engineer's got a lot of experience. Post production could also be a lot better.

Steady on mate, bit of a cutthroat opinion there?? that last post was like the sermon on the mount, well all of the posturing without any of the Son-of-God badassness!

AFT put on a good live show, very atmospheric stuff... Get your ear to the dirty floor of Dorans or the Lower Deck and outta the backstage of the Button Factory, theres some great stuff out there without being mentioned in HotPress...

ABAM for example, as close to battles as you're gonna get in Dublin, par example. No big fanfare for them (so far) but bands like that are way more worthy of attention than most of the tosh in the 'hot tips for 2008' section in many mags/websites!

Been away for the last 11 months traveling and I still have lend me your face stuck in my head. I just heard the song before I left in May and 11 months later, I'm still singing it despite not hearing the song since last May. Top tune, glad to hear they are not a one hit wonder.

No, wasnt saying that, no matter how much you and the rest of the journo crowd champion this group, i think they are crap

crap singer, crap songs and no matter how many american football helmuts, headbands they wear or rubbish songs about ironic 80s/90s stars they write, until they write a good one i'll continue thinking they are sh*te...simple as. not quirky, "different" or anything els..just tuneless and pointless.

a guitar might vary it a bit, instead of naff synth overload...

    end of rant.

Well, I have to completely disagree with you.

It's ridiculous to say 'crap singer' too, MayKay has an incredible voice.

"a guitar might vary it a bit" - that's a silly thing to say when they are more dexterous with synths than any other synth-based band I can think of without sacrificing melody. Would you tell an opera singer to get a four to the floor beat, or a punk band to stick in some Snow Patrol piano riffs?

But if you don't get it, say you don't get it, don't say it sucks just because you don't understand it.

Oh c'mon Una, it's not that he doesn't understand it. He doesn't like it, ergo he thinks it sucks. And he's entitled to say it.

As for May Kay's voice, I enjoy what she does but it's far from incredible and she's going to do some serious damage to it in the future.

Show me a band that does have so called "Longevity"!!!

I mean you cannot predict whats gonna happen to a band, just enjoy the tune's!

Sure it take alot less energy to love, than it does to hate!

Ah i like a bit of FLapes! Ya's can all talk about how they may not have much longevity in the music world considering current trends changing faster than ever but cmon,
Show me a band that does have so called "Longevity"!!!

I mean you cannot predict whats gonna happen to a band, just enjoy the tune's!

Spot on! If the liner notes of their re-issues are to be believed, Galaxie 500s highest ambition on starting out was to get a single into the bargain bin of their local record shops. Nowadays indie bands and/or the folks that listen to them talk about things like "careers", "making it" and "longevity". What gives? Just enjoy the moment in the here and now.
