Captain Beefheart has some pretty class tunes alright - I got into him thru Robert Smith, who's a big fan..

Is the thread a "current listening" thread? If so... my album of the moment is Polar Bear's "Held on the Tips of Fingers" (the "token" Mercury Awards 2005 jazz nomination) - their drummer is one of the best drummers EVER to grace a kit.

    Links; http://www.myspace.com/sebastianrochford
    http://www.polarbearmusic.com/

"[The album] explores a mix of trance-like, long-note music over eerie, hypnotic grooves, full-on electronics and free-improv, melancholic songs, punky thrashes and some of the best two-sax conversation to be heard on the current scene." JohnFordham, The Guardian

"This is not nu jazz, acid jazz, Jamie jazz, Parky jazz, Brit jazz, beardo jazz,post-jazz or twee jazz. It's dream jazz." Paul Morley, Observer Music Monthly

I am currently enjoying Bruce Springsteen's Magic album.

Speaking of albums it took you ages to get around to buying, I finally got around to buying my FIRST EVER copy of "Never Mind The Boll*cks" last week. All together now..."get piss*d, destroy !!"

Rick James? Vaguely comical black punk-funk musician. Known for taking massive amounts of drugs and beating and torturing women. Big in the eighties.

    Not my cup of tea.

some good tracks on the album, mary jane, give it to me baby, superfreak etc.. sleazy pop/funk...some of its really good, some not so good.

he actually started out in music as good mates with neil young, in fact they were in a group together i think or at least they played together.....and they lived together at one point i think...

he did beat and torture women and took loads of drugs...in fact he used to line the windows of his mansion with tin foil so he'd never know if it was night or day and he took a serious amount of cocaine. he made alot of people very f*ckin wealthy with his habit i'd say..on a personal level he seemed to have alot of problems..but i like some of his music...

when he died, he had claimed to have been clean..however they found 9 different substances in his body in the toxicology report..

his music is great though in my opinion....

the republic of loose borrow heavily from him..no bad thing..

M.I.A.'s "Kala" and Jamie T's "Panic Prevention"... both incredibly talented artists - especially for their ages.. sure they're only kidz!

Can't stop listening to that new White Stripes tune either .. "Conquest" - normally can't stand them, but that song is f**king hilarious - it's like something off "Rock School" !

I'm listening to an old tape I found - must've made it in primary school.. it's stuff from Dave Fannings show, with stuff like The Cure "Lullaby", Llyod Cole "Are You Ready to be Heartbroken", The Cult "Edie", U2 doing "Unchained Melody" and some Sugarcubes stuff. Nice!

    Mostly been listening to

Ewan Pearson - Piece Work: excellent retrospective of one of the finest remix producers in the world today.
Chromatics - Night Drive: The post electroclash Italo revival continues, but in a slower, darker, more late-night vein than Sally Shapiro. The cover of Kate Bushs "running up that hill" is pretty awesome.

I'm going through a phase of just listening to the radio, not a project like yours but just feeling a bit jaded... I'm more likely to find new stuff if I skip across the wavelengths than if I go to the usual sites/places...

Today I have been mostly been listening to tracks from Apparat, Modeselektor, and most bizarrely Moby. "Play" is actually sort of listenable again these days now its no longer on every single ad on the telly.

Good man Binokular! Been listening to an awful lot of Apparat recently myself, mostly 'Walls' and 'Duplex' from a few years back which is a better album, imo. Where does he get those sounds from? Have you checked out the collaboration he did with Ellen Allien 'Orchestra of Bubbles'? Quite excellent though less 'glitchy'. Saw him at Electric Picnic this year, me and about 12 other people!

'Play' is a masterpiece is always listenable, despite the fact he licensed every track out to advertisers. It really came out on nowhere in 1999 and I was fascinated by it for a long time. Mind you he's failed to make decent follow-up ever since.

Yep, love that album, it's how I heard of Apparat in the first place, only heard of him because I'm a massive fan of Ellen Allien and the whole Bpitch Control thing. Not heard Duplex, must check it out.

" despite the fact he licensed every track out to advertisers".. you can't knock an artist for making money, unless they're already totally minted. If they're decent & it helps finance their career, then fair f**ks to 'em. Must check this music out - not heard it yet.

Though you CAN knock Moby for it - he licensed his albums before they were even released! Not to mention his abominable live shows.. WHY would sommeone who obviously can't hold a note, sing live & WHY WHY WHY did he think that he could run around the stage with his guitar, attempting "rock god" poses and not look a complete & utter twat? Had he kept schtum & Stayed behind a keyboard, he'd have pulled it off with finesse.

I doubt Moby would have got any airplay or exposure if he had not licensed the albums before they were released. In a way, a better idea than licensing them after release where the advertiser is only cashing in on the post-release success of the album.

Iron and Wine - 'The Shepherd's Dog'
British Sea Power - 'Do You Like Rock Music?' This could turn out to be my 'Boxer' of this year.
QOTSA- 'Era Vulgaris.' Took me ages to give this a chance, and it's a lot stronger than I thought.

Also various Robyn tracks I got my little brother to download for me...

You'll like this so, Christian Falk featuring Robyn & Ola Salo "Dream On", sound quality isn't the best unfortunately.

Two tracks I particularly enjoyed listening to this morning:

The Mae Shi - Run to your grave: it's about consumerism or something and not being able to take it all with you, I think.
Kavinksky - Testarossa Night Drive (Sebastien Mix) - and in complete contrast, a hedonistic anthem to soundtrack that 80s icon of excess, the Ferrari Testarossa, which to a generation raised on playing Sega Outrun and Miami Vice probably seems like the coolest thing ever. Of course the reality is the Testarossa was one of the worst cars Ferrari ever built and a bit of a dog. Try telling that to the 80s nostalgia kids though, never meet your heroes, etc. Anyway, class track, stick with the fantasy.

My Bloody Valentine - Soon (Andy Weatherall mix) - can't remember where I found this mix, some blog site, track it down, it's great. It's a fairly simple remix as remixes go, loop one of the already looped guitar parts, add some hip hop beats, a few vocal samples, but it works!

Jellyfish's Spilt Milk - 15 years old but nobody has done anything as poptastic since then. Check out the youtube clips of these guys on Later with Jools, brilliant stuff.

Ween's La Cucaracha - Took me a while to get into it, but I love it now. 'Object' is one of their best tracks ever. David Sanborn's sax on 'Your Party' and Gene Ween's lyrics and delivery make a delicious closer.

Tomahawk's Anonymous - Hard Rock Interpretations of Native American songs from the 19th Century. Hope they tour this album, they owe us one after cancelling the "Mit Gas" European Tour in 2003.

Seefeel 'Quique' Redux edition (Early nineties nostalgia)
The Cinematic Orchestra 'Ma Fleur' (Absolutely stunning late-night/hangover music, Lou Rhodes and Patrick Watson on vocal duties)
Led Zeppelin 'Mothership' (Majestic and overwhelming. The f**king drumming!)
American Music Club 'The Golden Age' (Why this band, and their frontman Mark Eitzel, remain largely unknown is an absolute travesty)
British Sea Power 'Do You Like Rock Music?' (Bit disappointing after reading all the glowing reviews, only bought it yesterday so not giving up on it yet!)
The Field 'From here We go Sublime' (sublime indeed)

    On the way home tonight

Yo La Tengo - Be thankful for what you've got (William DeVaughn cover as made famous by Massive Attack) - if you saw someone on the M50 in a red MR2 "diggin the scene with a gangster lean" this evening, that was me. Got a sunroof top, but no whitewalls.
