OK, now you have loads of time at work to mess about...

Have you ever done this? http://www.thisdayinmusic.com

It shows you what song was at No.1 on the day you were born.

(Go to 'Birthday No.1' at the top of the site).

    My number 1's are:
'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon in the US
'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' by Little Jimmy Osmond in the UK
'Ben' by Michael Jackson in Australia

    Some are better than others!

When I was a kid I thought if I got as far as the 21st Century, I'd be living in a space ship, like Buck Rogers... now I'm in a house on the north west coast of Ireland, I can't help but feeling a little bit hard-done-by!

Christ, no!! Donegal is possibly the most depressing county in Ireland - it's politically part of the republic, but looks, feels & smells like Nordieland. Though it does have Bundoran... "the seaside town that they forgot to bomb"... and Killybegs - the home of frozen battered cod!

Nordieland, zzz zzz....but we are also a milion miles away from your wanna be West Britain. Bundoran? Each year a gathering of us meet during summer solstice as the sun dips in an attempt to push Bundoran into Leitrim...we are getting closer, maybe next year!

HAHAHA!!! It's no more than Leitrim deserves!!! As for "west brits".. I agree with you there - the south is more british than it cares to admit, more american than it realises, and less european than it pretends to be, but that's modern Ireland I suppose.

"Everyone" might have a job, but the standard of living isn't amazing - we've a disasterous health system, a diabolical communications network, terrible public transport (in the counties where they HAVE public transport), an over-priced, staggering housing market, an ever increasing gap between the haves & have-nots, and all presided over by a buffoon who can't seem to remember why had a bank account... calling to mind Father Ted's quote - "The money was just resting in my account".

Ireland IS a great country, but our economic status has a lot more to do with luck than anything else... the attitude that "everything's great - everyone's got a job" is exactly the reason why the general public voted Bertie back in for another term (and made me seriously question the sensibility of allowing people to vote in a democracy!).

As for the "west britain" comment by PQ.. well, it's as valid as your comment about the North looking like it's stuck in the 80s... don't dish it out if ya can't take it!

Great quote from an interview with Malcy here...

"I wrote it for a friend who was morbidly fixated about dying and couldn't sleep or anything. The lyrics - "You're gonna die alone/ You've got to laugh into the dark" - were my idea of ways to make her feel better, although I'm still working on a fourth verse to give it a happy ending, because I haven't worked out the true meaning of life yet. But the song was supposed to be a joke and has arpeggios, a chugging beat and is actually very uplifting and happy. My nieces, ages four and six, sing We're All Going to Die at school."
