Two leftie-guitarist songwriters (Washington born) who rose to prominence almost overnight with a hard-edged music that made everyone stand up and pay attention. Both fronted pared down no-nonsense bands, released three studio albums in their brief existence in the spotlight and both died in slightly mysterious circumstances after a rapid rise to the top of the musical heap. Too rapid, maybe.

In a way, both are slightly underrated. The songs you'd associate most with them don't do justice to their abilities but that's usually the case anyway. On the other hand, their "celebrity" profiles have probably never been higher (you see Hendrix t-shirts almost every day)

So who is your favourite of the two? Or if you want to be more objective, who was a better songwriter?

Jimi's a better musician, Kurt wrote better songs.

Edit: I mean Kurt wrote more good songs.

Jimi, and his songs too. That's where I see him as underrated. Everybody knows about the fretboard gymnastics god, less appreciate his overall musical/songwriting talent.

I thought Jimi was better overall.

Dont think you can really split it up into strictly "better songwriter," you have to take what they gave us.

Nirvana never really did anything for me, i think they just tapped into a certain amount of anger, or frustration that i never really got, but Jimi holy s**t! The Band of Gypsies album is phenomenal, so is Electric Lady Land, then theres all the singles, amazing body of work.

Would disagree strongly that Kurt wrote more good songs, then again, that is of course subjective! I would put Jimi's cover of All ALong the Watchtower above nearly anything that Nirvana wrote, for all the same reasons that people like Nirvana too.
