Seriously, It's almost turning into an obsession. I've been mainlining their music straight into my brain stem through iPod, home stereo and in the car. I don't know what it is but their music seems endlessly replayable, I never get sick of it...They have 3 albums and 1 EP and the quality across the all 4 is remarkable, very dark yet incredibly atmospheric..saw them in the Tripod back in April and the visuals/Music combination was pretty mindblowing. I've a weakness for post-rock/instrumental/ambient, it's all I really llisten to..Mogwai, Godspeed, Mono,Slint, Sigur..the usual, but I never thought I would discover an Irish band that could be the equal of those bands (praise indeed)...they did something with Fearghal McKee of Whipping Boy (probably the last Irish band I was truly blown away by) but I can't it find it anywhere..did they record material together or was it just a gig? Anyone else develop a fixation on a band's music whereas you rarely listen to anything else? It's probably not healthy, to be honest!

Ah, I think you could do a lot worse than listen to them constantly. Brilliant band. Probably the best to emerge from these shores for many years, actually.

The song they did with Feargal was called "What you wanna start" - a great song, a kind of poppy version of the Whipping Boy. It used to be available as a free download from his web page, but the page seems to have dissapeared - as has Feargal himself. Not surprising after his god-awful solo drunken appearances last year, not to mention the atrocious re-union gigs with W.Boy.

Thanks James but A God Is An Astronaut/McKee collaboration that is 'poppy'?????!!!! Gives new meaning to the term 'change of direction'..will see if I can dig it out from the darkest recesses of the Interweb...yeah yr right the Whipping Boy reunion was a bad idea alright.

I remember that tune! Here's a link to it.... http://artists.cpu.ie/bands/1547/ The website (CPU) is being upgraded at the moment, so it looks a bit all over the place, but the player on the right hand side still works fine. I saw McKee do a solo gig in Sligo last year... he arrived 2 hours late, fell out of a taxi with a bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand & played a terrible gig. Still, he's got one of the finest voices that's come from this country. As for not being able to stop listening to God is an Astronaut.. ever tried the "stop" button? (Just kiddin'!!)

Not a fan of God is an Astronaut but I do know, as do we all I'm sure, what it's like to be obsessive about a particular band. I remember when Sugar's "Copper Blue" album came out, I listened to nothing else for months on end. At the moment there's rarely anything played in the John Doe household but the Foo Fighters.

I was the same with 'Copper Blue', John. Especially the first three songs, 'A Good Idea' still gives me goosebumps all these years later.

I have to step in on this one and say that the gig in the Music Centre (Button Factory?!?) was one of the most boring gigs I have ever had to endure. Repetitive to the point of nauseating. Their lack of stage presence was only heightened by the ridiculous on-screen imagery used to jazz up the overall show. So they show some images of the war in Iraq during one of their songs. Are you trying to say something? Is there a big message in this song? .....No it's just layered guitars played slightly differently to the last song. I nearly pissed myself laughing at this attempt to be 'serious' and 'heavy'. ....Worst protest song ever

Yes, that whole projected imagery thing...I could take it or leave it, but the music itself is the kind that you really have to get involved in. You need to leave your head behind and jump in, cos it works on an almost primal level.

You're obviously not a fan so why did you buy a ticket? Even if you got a free pass, why did you bother going? You would have already known in advance about the visuals and the fact that the band keep a low-profile on stage. Also, if you're not into instrumental/post-rock and prefer a conventional rock performance with vocals and interaction with the crowd then there is a strong possibility you are going to be bored at a God Is an Astronaut gig. Also, I don't think the band give a toss about 'stage presence', for them it's all about the music and the visuals while they themselves keep a low-profile on stage. I wasn't at the TBMC gig but I saw them at Tripod and the music/visuals really worked brilliantly together.
