The canopy that once welcomed guests to the Olympia venue in Dublin is set to make a comeback.

The Minister of Arts, Sports and Tourism, John O’Donoghue, will today reveal the final stages are in progress to restore the glass canopy, seen in the pic on the right.

It had been a key feature of the venue since it opened in 1897. However it was damaged when a truck drove into it in 2004.

Since then, it has been in the hands of specialists in Scotland, who are close to bringing it back to its former glory.

The canopy will be re-installed in the summer when Dublin City Council extend the pavement of Dame Street, home of the venue.

Minister O’Donoghue said: “The Olympia Theatre is one of Dublin’s most historic venues and I am delighted to be able to announce the restoration of its eye-catching ornate glass canopy. The canopy was a beautiful landmark of the city and has been greatly missed. The people of Dublin, and indeed Ireland, we will be delighted to have it standing proud on Dame Street once again.”

To quote the Daily Show, thats like Charles Manson leaving a note on the door saying 'sorry about the carpet.' That place needs to sort out its sound, never mind mouldy old canopies. The sound at the Arcade Fire gig was dreadful, they brought this huge fantastic band to us and we just couldn't hear them. The musicians themselves were clearly frustrated with the sound aswell. Its an embarrassment compared to other venues in the city, but hey, at least its got a canopy now.
