What does everyone rate as the best album covers around? And why? I was talking to a mate about this yesterday. And he informed me that the System Of A Down album which just had 'STEAL THIS ALBUM' on it was pulled off the shelves of some shops. Is this true? Any other album covers that have caused a stir through the years?

I forgot to mention that I think the album cover on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles is my favourite.

Definately maybe what? Dont leave me hanging... Hmmm...it's a good 'un this. The cover for Therapy's Troublegum is ace. So is Pearl Jam's Binaural. Mexican Pets - Humbucker Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction. ....hmmmmmmmm. I'm going to go all left wing here and say Tool's AEnima...the North American hologram one. That fantastic.

Jimmy Hendrix - Electric Ladyland. Originally just a load of hippy girls in the buff. Apparently caused quite a stirr..... Also the whole spiritulized (ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space) tablet case thing was pretty darn cool.

We had a thread on this quite a while back, so rather than retype all my choices again, I'll just post the link to that thread (yeah, I'm THAT lazy ) http://www.cluas.com/discussion/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2307&SearchTerms=album,covers

It was the usual suspects in the US, Walmart. The thing that annoyed me about that album was, it was purposely made look like a bootleg cd complete with black marker on inlaycard & cd. It still cost full price. I suppose it took some expesive advertising firm alot of time to come up with the concept ! Also Walmart doesnt like song titles like 'f**k The System' ... I remember the first chapter of a Sean Hughes book being called 'How to steal this book'. Even reccomended that if you're caught, you could use the book as a defence !

Not a bad thread, Small Faces - Ogden's Nutgone Flake - Original LP, looked like a tin of tobacco and was perfectly circular - Bell X1's Music In Mouth was in the same vain but a tin of sweets, and it was in a plastic case, and square, so actually not a lot Bell X1 at all. The Who - The Who By Numbers. A Simple Join the dots and look!! - It's the band. Agree with Ianofthedead - Spiritulaized's Let It Come Down But the best I have seen by far is Gruff Rhys' album cover, it has a cardboard kinda tie around thing and it folds out from an X shape to reveal the inlay card containing the CD - class!!

I'd have to go with Spiritulized's Let it come down and the single for the frog song that Paul Mccartney wrote he has a splendid scarf on the cover.

Aphex Twins 'Come To Daddy' EP and 'Windowlicker' single had great covers too. Kraftwerk's 'Trans-Europe Express' is good, it's so air brushed and corporate looking (read 'machine' like!)

actually the wilco one for "a ghost is born" that actually just won a grammy for best packaging is mine, just an egg on the front and an empty cracked egg on the back. simple.

Suede's Dog Man Star - lonely, atmospheric, poignant, and very very dark

Metallica, Master of Puppets, all Iron Maiden covers but especially Piece of mind and Killers. That was the era right before television was used to sell music products (so they had to use the cover to communicate the concept of the songs..or image, or something) but right after advances in album cover art concepts and techniques, so you get the best covers back then.
