| | I second that emotion.....Jape are fabulous and Richie Egan wins the 'Nicest Person in the World 2004' award hands down!....and before anyone asks or asssumes...no I don't know or manage Jape....I'm not a friend with an agenda....they/he makes truly beautiful, atmospheric music and they are great live..very entertaining and wayyy too modest | | | |

| | I saw him open for David Kitt in whelans in the summer and thought he was completely crap (mainly becasue I didn't think he could sing, and once again, I was at a Kittser gig), but I've got to admit that the bits from the album that I've heard I really like.
Meanest thing anyone wrote about Jape that I've seen was something along the lines of "Richie Egan plays bass for the instrumental Redneck Manifesto, after listening to this it's obvious why they are instumental".
So is that a recomendation from me or not? I'm not sure myself, probably a thumbs up. | | | |

| | He reminds me a bit of Damon Gough...aka Badly Drawn Boy...hang on..hang on..I mean it in the best possible way...let me justify: I'm not a huge BDB fan and he doesn't have the best voice in the world..but his singing matches his music, I think..it's introspective, subtle and soothing. Like BDB, I reckon Richie's voice suits the kind of music he's doing...it's perfect for the understated, well crafted songs he's playing. It's certainly not all quiet and lo-fi by any means, but I like it..you have to listen with attention and it draws you in. He's charismatic in a non-cocky way (BDB on the otherhand has his moments) I love seeing somebody really enjoying themselves on stage and looking totally comfortable and at home...un-selfconscious. The band look like they are really enjoying themselves too...for a change.
Was listening to 'Hour of the Bewilderbeast' again last night...haven't heard it in about a year..forgot what a lovely record it is...I was smiling away to myself | | | |

look out for 66e's album (www.66earehome.com) it'll be out fairly soon hopefully, it really is fantastic. | |

Well in fairness, had I known that there was an award I would have made more of an effort. 
I bought the album on Friday night, played it on Saturday morning, played it again on Saturday evening and now I'm playing it again. So I guess that means that I'm really digging it. It's hard to describe what I'm getting from it but it's just really f**king good.

Gar, re: Jonathan Richman, I'd recommend the following if you want to listen to his stuff:
'I Must Be King'
'Action Packed'
...and some of his better albums, which are probably only available via d'internet: 'I'm So Confused','You Must Ask The Heart' and 'I Jonathan'. His 70s stuff leaves me cold: his 90s stuff is brilliant. New album is poor, though; reviewed it a while back.
...thanks for the list, lots of good ideas for stuff to check out.
