Well done to everyone involved with Saturday night in Whelans. Great gig by Bell X1, but the cream of the crop had to be Republic of Loose. What a band!

It was, indeed, a rather fabulous night. But I have to disagree with the above... the star of the show, for me, was the irascible and cranky but compelling Dave Couse. It's great to see some of his work in the top 50 lbums compiled by this site. His lyrics are still the key for me - seering and insightful. Much as I enjoyed the mannered melodicism of BellX1 and the organised chaos that is Rebublic of Loose, the highlight of the night was Couse railing against the cult of celebrity whilst pretending to read from the Daily Mirror. Brilliant stuff.

Disapointed as I was to find the Great Mr Couse so low down the bill I am still heartened to hear that ( Yet again ) he has blown someone off the stage. Well done anyway Cluas and congrats

Agree with the Dave Couse comments - his theatrics with The Mirror will tops. Shame there were not a few more bodies through the door when he went on but thems the breaks when you get a sunny Saturday in Dublin - everyone seemed to arrive at 9:30.

Indeedy, a great night out, it must be said. I had to guard a door and had the fabulous honour of getting 2 non-paying scangers kicked out!!! I must confess that gave me a rather twisted buzz. Lousy uncharitable bums!!!! Anyway, I didn't even know Ann Scott was playing and she was the highlight for me, got to chat to her after, nice girl. Dave Couse's set was pretty good too but his in-between song banter was a bit pretentious I thought. Republic of Loose had a screw loose (in a good way) and BellX1's acoustic set was great. I lost all the other organisers and writers after the show in a drunken stupor and never got off the dance floor all bloody night. Great show over all Happy birthday Cluas, see you at your 10th, 20th, 25th and 50th birthday bashes!!! If I live that long......... Q2

I admire Dave Couse's work but his ranting came across to me as simply childish petulance. Yes Dave a lot of people preferred to stand at the bar yapping rather than come and worship you. It happens. Get over it. Republic of Loose blew me away alright, even though I usually have a problem with dyed in the wool Dubliners pretending they grew up in a Mississippi shotgun shack ( I call it Liam O'Maonlai Syndrome ).

RE John Doe's last comment: I've the same opinion, but when they pull it off as good as that its hard to knock. The singer is the one of the best frontmen I've ever seen live. By the way what the feck was that "raise the stakes" comment from some punter in the crowd about? seemed a bit silly to me. handled very well by the singer though, funny.

I have a suspicion that the 'Raise the Stakes' thing is a bit of a Rep of Loose in joke. There is a lot of banter and slagging between the crowd & Mick Pyro at their gigs and the comment came right before 'Girl I want to f*ck you up'. They certainly do put on a kicking live show!
