What does everyone make of the 'free download' phenomenon that's going on at the moment?
Obviously it worked for Radiohead as they're established & got massive PR...but how will new, unknown indie acts benefit from this?
Incidentally, Dubliner Chris Singleton's just made his record available as a free download at http://www.singletonmusic.com/freedownload2/
if anyone's interested.

There's a funny taste off this thread.. It reminds me of something.. hmm, what is it? Oh yeah, Spam - that's it.

Ah I knew some wit would think that. And he/she/it would have a slight point. That said I am genuinely interested in it. I wonder how it's going to work.

Same as they benefit from sticking free downloads up on MySpace.. it's free promotion with no financial gain.
Oh & incidentally, you can get Star Belgrade's music for free from
www.sonicbids.com/starbelgrade
www.myspace.com/starbelgrade
(spam by any other name tastes of spam)

Think it works a bit better if you can collect data as you give the music away - that's the way the Chris Singleton download works. You get the album if you join the mailing list.

You might get a bit of that on the Singleton one too...
But then again you asked for it!

You get the album if you join the mailing list.
This is what free yahoo/hotmail accounts that you never ever check are for
