Um, the writers aren't of a very good quality + from talking to people who write for/have written for the magazine, reviews are edited to fit in with an editorial bias/policy + A lot of the pages are sponsored, so you have to question a commercial/advertorial bias + I don't see why a music magazine has to be full of dodgy political polemics, sport, random interviews with people who have nothing to do with music + Olaf T is a joke + The social pages are completely lame + there's too much influence from PR and record labels into the mag's content + there seems to be no desire to promote or even vaguely cultivate an interest in newness or breaking genres = a ridiculous piece of work.

| Hotpress has some good reviews and some poor ones, and i do think they are unfairly biased towards irish acts - however, british magazines are biased towards british acts as well as german magazines are biased towards german too. The thing that annoys me is more the rehashing of press releases, some editorial parts are quite blatent and lazy, and while there are many up and coming journalists and writers working very hard for to get an opportunity they seem content with slightly below par stuff.
It was relevant once, but isn't anymore unfortunately.
Foggy notions is a better magazine, but again has it own editorial slant which makes everything they say come with a pinch of salt, i have bought albums on their recommendation and been disapointed.
i also think the delorentos album is pretty good. | | | |

| | Hot Press is an industry rag, nothing more or less-the amount of advertisements featured between its pages would make even Rolling Stone blush. Moreover, with the honourable exceptions of Peter Murphy and Eamonn McCann, it is essentially a halfway house for mediocre journalists who failed to work for a proper magazine or newspaper. | I went to the Hotpress interview with Tim Delaughter of The Polyphonic Spree at EP and got to see - first hand - just how awful these hacks are.
The guy asked about how the band formed (Is this relevant? They formed almost 8 years ago..).
He asked how many people are in the band (they have a website and a wiki page).
"I heard something about you playing at a Nobel Peace Prize show.. is that true?" (google "nobel peace prize polyphonic spree").
"Who won the prize that year?" (same link, baby!).
Tim replied "Wangari Maathai"
"What did he win it for?"

Blogs seem to be where its at this days - but they're as shameless as Hot Press when it comes to hyping mediocre talents - "MUSTAPHA AND THE WOMBATS: BEST BAND IN THE ENTIRE WORLD EVER" etc etc etc.

| i must admit to reading hotpress regularly. its true alot of it is crap journalism and coming back to the main point, i do find its cd reviews very biased but they fire out the odd article which aint half bad.
but i agree some great albums get s**te reviews and some s**te bands get great reviews. | | | |

| emmm...Hybrasil's Monkey Pole 6/10, cannot remember the patrionising reviewers name, but it flies in the face of this thread title...whereas Mick Heaney in the Times called it exhilarating, hitting the nail on the head...i drove an 80 mile round trip on Sat morning to pick up a copy, really loving it.
