I saw Winehouse on TV doing the Other Voices show recently. I thought her voice was very affected. Lots of over-emoting and histrionics but very little actual singing. It got on my nerves actually, I had to switch it off. She may have been overcompensating a bit because it was just her and two other guys, no band. I like the singles she's put out but this style of singing does nothing for me.

Yeh, she has some voice alright
Peejay - would you prefer she sang exactly like her voice is on the album? sure in that case you might as well just throw on her album instead and not bother seeing her live or catching her live performances on tv
I wouldn't call it histrionics, obviously depends on the person but i really like the way she changes her vocal style for the live shows - she could sing exactly like on the album if she wanted but that's just boring - far better to mix it up a bit IMO

Sometimes Winehouse to me sounds a little like Angela McCluskey, the singer from Telepopmusik who had a solo album three years ago (and lots of airplay for a single called 'It's Been Done') - the kind of voice that can indeed sound a wee bit affected but still engaging enough.

But I think her main attribute is her attitude - I've a soft spot for sassiness in singers ;D

Well she doesn't have to duplicate the album version exactly and she doesn't have to ham it up either.
The emotional jazz singer schtick looks a bit like a stab at credibility. It is a serious music show after all, its not T4 Saturday. I just don't think it works. I like her throaty pop-soul voice but the Billie Holiday thing just grates a bit.

Looking forward to the next single though.

Church: Had an "angelic voice"....made a fortune..then found booze n blokes n sex n drugs yada yada yada...
pregnant by a female rugby player....

Winehouse: looks a bit like and sings like Fran Drescher talks... (brooklyn comedian..star of that tv show the nanny)...winehouse is a pain in the crack...the tunes on her album are just about familiar enough to make it lisetenable... ..but she is evidently a car crash waiting to happen......

church and winehouse both like drinkin and gettimg wrecked....but church is better lookin...

winehouse's tunes are better but church isnt as crazy as winehouse..that said her fella shaves his legs....

both could probably get away with eating a pack of tayto in me leaba though
