I'm getting married in November this year and I'm struggling to find a DJ who will play the type of music I want to hear/dance to at my wedding. They're all sending me demo cd's full of ABBA and Robbie Williams, and that's fine in small doses (ie when drunk enough) but I'd also like to hear some Interpol, The Cure, etc, basically indie tunes as well as wedding classics like YMCA (it's not for me, it's my uncle, he loves that song...) thrown in for good measure.

Anyone know where I might find a DJ who might be willing to do this? Full rates paid.

Steve

Just sit down make a playlist? give it to the DJ and tell him he needs to play the stuff on the list.

That was the first thing I tried but 4 out of 5 of them said they had their own set list that had proven "very popular so why change it?" and the other didn't even bother getting back to me, so I assumed they were all like that.

Surely you must have a friend who is reasonably competant enough to DJ? It's not rocket science, just rent the PA and get them to play what's on the playlist. It's not like they'll have to be able to mix or beatmatch or anything.

I never actually thought of that.

Sometimes it's the simple things.

Not sure if this crowd would do a wedding, but no harm in asking ....

I went to a wedding last year and muso-groom got his mate to DJ with a specified playlist. It was great actually, brilliant music (I think the first dance song was Waits' Johnsburg illinois) and they gave out a CD at the end of the night with all the tracks on. There's so many great tracks out there that get people dancing without having to fall back on the boring old reliables. It just takes a little imagination.

Good luck with the wedding

Yep, drafting in the buddies is the way to go. I've been to a few 30th birthday parties and they've all been DJ'd by friends who bring along tunes etc. Okay, 30ths don't compare to weddings however if the worst comes to the worst you could always just burn a mix CD and press play!
