Not overly impressed with the choices myself, with the exception of maybe Artic Monkeys(purely on a success level), Guillemots and Thom Yorke….. Anybody know anything about Sway? edit - just checked on google - Dizzee Rascal type thang apparently

What Irish album was good enough to get nominated? Is it due a mainstream winner this year? Antony is wonderful and all as well as not really being all that out there, but it caused a fair few ripples when he won it last year.

Is it just me, or has that Editors album been around for an age ?

Yea im pretty sure it JUST about makes it - I bought it not long after they played Spring Budrising 2005 supporting The Departure. I think a few of the singles were already out and have been re-released again over the last while since the album came out.

well if Arctic Monkeys don't get it and they continue their line of thought in picking the winner my money would be on Guillemots.

Why have some journalists been complaining about the fact the 'Irish have been ignored' as in this morning's Metro paper? Erm, that might have something to do with fact that no decent Irish albums have been released in the past year or so!!!(I don't know what Julie Feeney album is like). 'Oh, us poor Irish we've been ignored by the Brits'. They're under no obligation to include Irish artists anyway. Get over it.

the reason is probably because the Mercury hype themselves as Best British & Irish album but they've only ever included 2 or 3 irish acts in over 12 years. thats why the Choice thing was set up and was such a success. still, given the poor state of this year's list, i'm surprised The Walls or Pugwash didnt end up on it

Agreed Pilchard, and while there hasn't been too many impressive Irish albums over the last 12 months, Pugwash's 'Jollity' certainly would stand up against all of those on the shortlist, it's a little masterpiece!

Zoe Rahman is the obligatory jazz album. Scritti Politti ... 70s Punk band, turned 80s Pop band, turned 90s hermit.
