Not that it needs pointing out how pathetic and embarrassing James Blunt (vocal chords) is... but I just heard one of his songs on the radio and did a double take when I heard some of the lyrics, I had to look them up, the verse is as follows; I know your fears and you know mine. We've had our doubts but now we're fine, And I love you, I swear that's true. I cannot live without you. Who I ask you, who is God's name considered this petty whiner for Electric Picnic last year???!!!

I know. He's pretty shabby as both a musician and writer of lyrics. The example you gave is just sub-teenager. Hell, it doesn't seem to make a difference to the Blunt loving lemmings out there!

Indeed there's always them, like today when the gay boss and other girl in work started discussing, right in front of me I might add, how Kelly Clarkson's album is actually so good... Yeah I'm sure every song has a brilliant key change towards the end. Muppets. Wouldn't like to say it directly but; Gun. A. Them. Wish. I. Had. Kill. To. I.

Kelly Clarkson's last album is quite good. What on earth has that got to do with James Blunt anyway? 'SInce You've Been Gone' is definately one of my favourite singles of 2005.

it doesn't prove anything, apart from the fact that I like it.

For your sake, I hope you aren't writing this at work whilst having your internet use being monitored, otherwise... Ass. Fired. Desk. Clear. Now

Una, I was just generally saying how there are always people who will think such tripe is great. Such as James Blunt and Kelly Clarkson. I think Kelly Clarkson is mock teen angst bullsh*t, she can sing alright & it's catchy, but it's as generic, boring and unprofound as westlife. Rev J, It's ok. I actually said "Please give me a gun now" to their faces so they know. But thanks for the warning. Although I will add that I didn't tell them that I wanted to use it on them per se, just that I wanted one. Maybe I was planning on going hunting for all they know.

Gawd I thought you were being sarcastic. I can't believe that the merits of a talent competition winner are being upheld on an alternative music forum! *shocked*

Blunt - I just find it easier to ignore him Kelly Clarkson - very, very American, very confessional in a naive Ricki Lake/Oprah kind of way (much like the over-hype Eminem in a way), catchy but not that catchy, decent vocals. Basically Kelly Clarkson is what happens when the traditional middle-US Discophobia thats probably been there since the Puritans stepped off the Mayflower represses the desire for straight up pop thrills and we end up with this weird pop star trying to be "serious" rock hybrid thats pretty awful really. Just get it out of your system people, listen to some Kylie, Sugababes, Rachel Stevens, whatever (even Abba if you really must, Steps is where I kinda draw a "now you're just being daft" line in the sand ). It's OK, it doesn't make you a bad person. Not that theres anything inherently wrong with US pop-rock crossovers if done right, The Bangles and The Go-Gos were class, of course they held on the one element of pop music that Miss Clarkson forgot - Fun! (oh yeah, and decent tunes...)

That Kelly Clarkson song was number 5 or 6 in Pitchfork's Top 50 singles of the year. Which means it's 'ok' to like her. Which is bollocks.

Kelly Clarkson is cute. Since You've Been Gone is a good song. That is all, nothing to see here...

I won't hear a bad word said about Abba. And no, I'm not gay. This is a band whose best songs are, quite simply, masterclasses in songwriting. Anyone who thinks I'm taking the piss, go and listen to "SOS". You'll find more cracking melodies, brilliant musicianship, and all round songwriting nous than you'll find on a thousand Arctic Monkeys albums. ( And I love the Arctic Monkeys album. )

John Doe, not saying anything bad against Abba (well not much bad), but I merely use them to illustrate where I stand on the cheesy pop issue, they are the figurative line in the sand just precariously balanced on that point between poptastic brilliance (SOS, Take a Chance on Me) and utter gut wrenchingly awful muck like that "I believe in Angels" song which was rubbish even before westlife covered it. If you like Abbas more poptastic moments, check out this "I can't believe it's not Abba" track called "Shoes off, Boots on" I've posted before: http://www.bubblegum-machine.com/week6.html It's by a Dutch girl band called LUV who I don't think ever made any kind of impact over here (no idea how big they were in their home country). It might seem pretty innocuous at first but it is a true "earworm", meaning it will burrow itself deep into your brain and stay there.

In one of his songs, dunno the name of it, he sings of a 'semi by the sea'. The filthy bastard. And, no, I'm not gay.
