I've just read a post by Dr. Bongo Badly (or something) about tickets for Nick Cave and I think it raises an interesting point. All tickets for Nicko are sold out pronto, thanks to credit card lines and internet buyers. I actually think this is an unfair system used to distribute tickets.
I suppose it really came to the fore when U2 played Slane a couple of years ago and the gig sold out in such a fashion that the traditional crowd sitting up all night outside HMV never had a chance. Same with the Chillis this year. Same thing happened with Neil Young in Vicar Street earlier on this year as well.
In my mind, such a system is unfair as it gives too many people an advantage over others. It also encourages touts to a huge extent, I'm sure. Surely it's not too much to ask to reserve tickets for over the counter to give people a fair crack of the whip.
Something should be done about it in my mind, 'cos otherwise you'll end up in a situation where every big gig comes along and the reality will be that if you don't have a credit card or access to the internet, you simply can't go.
Surely it can be done better than this.

to be honest i use the internet quite a lot to buy tickets.
Im lucky enough to have a credit card.
The argument against using credit card is fine,
except for the fact that not everyone lives near a TM
agent. Only major cities and large towns have TM agents.
Granted some of the local shops sell tickets. But they
usual get an allotement of tickets which can run out fairly quickly.
As far as im aware, the TM website now allows people to
use laser card to pay for tickets. Pretty much anyone can
get a laser card from their bank. Now all that you need is access to the internet....and that aint too hard to organise

What i am defending is using a credit card/internet to buy tickets.
Something which i frequently do. Its just handier.
Put it too you this way, if people could use the credit on their
phone to buy tickets on TM, would there be people
complaining that its ripping off the true fans by cheating the queuing mechanism ?.. id dont think so.
However, at the same time i do appreciate that not everyone has access to a credit card. And in that sense, there is a certain lack of fairness.
But the same system of distribution would be used by and ticket seller and not just TM. | | | |
