What a joke, best DJ Ian Dempsey (chuckle), best Irish band Aslan (belly laugh). Are you sure Bertie wasn't involved in the selection committee.

"...and in today's headlines, the top story: emigration has mysteriously rocketed to 1970s levels as crowds of young people headed to the ferry and airport this morning. Meanwhile, in entertainment news, last night's big winners at the Meteor Awards were Aslan, Paddy Casey and Ray Foley..."

Yawn.

Nothing earth-shattering there although i'd be hard pressed to pick substitute nominees. Why not just organise a free party in town to celebrate Irish music and have a good mix of live bands and the like instead.

Those awards are the most pointless bag of sh*te going.

anyone who has won the best new irish band/hope or whatever guise they put on it ends up in the wilderness..see humanzi, angels of pong and the revs...
they are terrible..i see they have done away with that one...

also fight like apes best band? are you having a laugh? have they even released an album? i'm sure they are very relevant trendy, good etc..but shouldnt a band at least release an album before being considered best in the country?

the awards are like their mobile coverage...sh*te

Being in a band, I know or have seen most of the bands on the scene at the moment & there's f**k all that I like - FLA are by far the stand-outs, so despite not having yet released an album, yes I would consider them the best band in the country, not only this year but for quite a long time.. the Irish music scene is & has been completely lame for donkeys years - it's been an absolute age since we'd decent stuff the likes of Whipping Boy, Sunbear, Candyshop etc so it's great to see an Irish act that has the tunes to make an impact not only here but outside the country. Besides, 2 quality EPs is far better than releasing an album's worth of s**te.

As for Meteor's coverage mobile wise - I've been with them for years & never had any coverage problems

That's a bit harsh.. 1983? Surely you meant 1993?!

And as I said, the music scene here's been s**te for years.. compare the first half of this century to albums released in the early 90's -

U2 - Achtung Baby (1991)
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991)
Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990)
U2 - Zooropa (1993)
Whipping Boy - Heartworm (1994)

No comparison.

The Meteors are a complete joke and always have been. We are tiny little country, with a small pool of bands and artists to pick from, so we have this farce where the same bloody dreary old acts are nominated EVERY YEAR... Ray Darcy, Ash, Aslan, Andrea Corr, Dolores O' Irish name, male singer songwriters called Paddy and Damien, Fight Like Apes?-overrated but they are there as the token cool/hip/slightly obscure act, The Blizzards and The Coronas are the worst bands on the planet, Roisin Murphy nominated in 2 categories but she left Ireland 20 years ago, blah, blah, blah..yawn.....and here are the nominations for the 2011 Meteor awards:
Best Irish Band
Ash
Aslan
Fight Likes Gorillas
The Floors
Delorentos
Future Kings Of Spain

Best Irish Male
Paddy Casey
Damien Dempsey
Declan O'Rourke
Glen Hansard
Dave Geraghty
Duke Special
Damien Boil InThe Bag

Best Irish Female
Cathy Davey
Dolores O'Riordan
Sinead O'Connor
Maria Doyle Kennedy
Andrea Corr
Roisin Murphy

Best Irish Pop Act
The Blizzards
Bell X1
The Coronas
Brian McFadden
Roisin Murphy
Westlife

You get my drift.
Rant over.
