.... Any appropriate recommendations? Ian Dempsey played Will Young's "I think I Better Leave Right Now" for him this morning.. I'm too depressed to think of any, though I suppose I shouldn't be too upset - who wants to go to Switzerland anyway.. even Hitler didn't bother his hole!

"I'm here just like I said
Though its breaking every rule I've ever made
My racing heart is just the same
Why make it strong to break it once again?
And I'd love to say I do
Give everything to you
But I can never now be true
So I say...

I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me how
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now

I'm here so please explain
Why you're opening up a healing wound again
I'm a little more careful
Perhaps it shows
But if I lose the highs, at least I'm spared the lows

I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me how
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now"

(Amazing how appropriate the lyrics are!!)

An '80s classic while he's watching next year's tournament from Austria-Switzerland on the portable telly in his leaky holiday caravan at Laytown: "...this means nothing to me - oh, Vienna!!!"

Sorry, You're Not A Winner - Enter Shikari
Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
Letter Of Resignation - The Weakerthans
Next Exit - Interpol
Nothing Left To Say But Goodbye - Audioslave

Or as Bruce Foxton might have put it - "Come in Stan old boy / Take a seat, take the weight off your feet / I've some news to tell you / There's no longer a position for you / Sorry Stevie Stan"

'The Man With The Red Face'-Laurent Garnier

Sorry,couldn't resist.

Poor ol' Stan, a great player and a decent-skin but his managerial skills are/were non-existent. A complete disaster from the beginning. It's because of him, but mostly, the comically-inept goons at the FAI that I have lost interest in the Irish team. You can't blame the players, we have great players who do well in the Premier League: Doyle scored twice on saturday, Keane is doing well for Spurs, O'Shea is underrated in my opinion, Miller is maturing well, Finnan, Given, Duff, Dunne...I don't buy that 'we don't have the players' argument. But they always underwhelm when they pull on the green shirt. Maybe they can't really be bothered? They need a Roy Keane type amanager to pull them together and give them a collective kick up the arse...

I odnt blame him, he isnt qualified to do the job. His previous experience was as a defensive coach at Walsall.

Walsall FC said that giving Stan the position was a tax break decsion as he would no longer be contracted a player while still playing.

So the guy has no managerial experience. Add a cancer ravaged Bobby Robson and a greedy accountant in Delaney and hence you're left with the present situation. Brian Kerr wasn't qualified either. He coached underaged teams and a number of eircom league teams. different level at senior international.

Next time, how about a manager? instead of a cheap option, inexperienced former player. 102 caps, 3 world cups, but yet useless manager.

See Brian Robson for similar stats, just cos you've played the game well doesnt mean you can manage properly.

There was a guy who rang up the footie show on Today FM on Saturday to say that no matter who had been managing the Irish team, that it would've made no difference - the players were simply not good enough. Michael Mc Mullen couldn't believe it & reckoned that if we'd someone like Keano in charge, it would've been a different story - the caller said "Do you really think Roy Keane would've been better than Staunton?", to which he replied, "Lorraine Keane would've done a better job than Stan!"

Class!
