| | I know that everytime someone mentions soundtracks on this board the usual roster of names crop up. It's so common for the big movies with one or two decent tunes on the soundtrack to get over-praised, but sometimes the soundtrack is compiled to such a satisifying degree that it overshadows the movie.
What are such soundtracks and movies?
*This was brought on by how Scorsese uses The Rolling Stones, Dropkick Murphys, John Lennon, Nas and The Allman Brothers Band in 'The Departed'. However, the mention of this is contradictory of this thread becasue I thought the movie was excellent - just the use of soundtrack was perfect in it and got me thinking. | | | |

We were talking about the use of Mogwai in the new Zidane film, in a different thread. The choice of music in a film like this, without dialogue is extremely important, and was spot on.
Off the top of my head, Vanilla Sky has a fantasic soundtrack. Jeffo B, Radiohead, Sigur Ros etc. Oh and The Big Lewbowski obviously aswell.
Younger Cop: And was there anything of value in the car?
The Dude: Oh, uh, yeah, uh... a tape deck, some Creedence tapes
Maybe a question for another thread but the soundtrack in Dancer in the Dark, the Bjork film with Lars von Trier was fantasic but f*ck, what a film. I thought it was fantastic. Anyone agree? | | | |

| | wonder boys is one, also calexico did score/soundtrack for a film with heather graham and luke wilson called committed, only reason i kept watching it, good will hunting soundtrack was better than the film as well | | | |

| | I think 'Wonder Boys' is a really under-rated movie actually. It's soundtrack is great, especially the use of Dylan's 'Things Have Changed'. Cameron Crowe/Nancy Wilson did that one for 'Vanilla Sky' - they always get it right with their soundtracks. | | | |

Broken Flowers: The Greenhornes (2 members of which are the less famous half of The Raconteurs), Marvin Gaye, Holly Go Lightly.
Anything by Scorsese who's a massive music fan.

| | Defo agree with you on 'Dead Man's Shoes'. I was at the premiere for that in London and there was a Q&A afterwards with director Shane Meadows, with the question posed to him about the soundtrack. He basically said that he was a big Calexico fan and wanted to include Richard Hawley at some stage too. | | | |

does robbie robertson do all the music for scorcese movies? know hes good friends with him anyways.
quentin tarantino usually has great soundtracks, loved almost famous (tiny dancer on the bus is one of my favourite music in a movie bits)

| | Dancer in the Dark is an incredible film, as were all of Von Trier's 'round that time, soundtrack wonderful too.
Natural Born Killers is the S/T that jumps to mine mind immediately....also Doctor Zhivago, Profondo Rosso, Nenette et Boni, Trouble Everyday, Paris Texas, all the Sergio Leone 'spaghetti westerns'..... | | | |

Actually having looked into this, It wasnt the Greenhornes from Broken Flowers that I REALLY dug... It was 'There is an end' by Holly Golightly - GREAT TUNE!!!
