Isn't the answer having more shows like 'Later......With Jools Holland'? Obviously not a carbon copy but putting the cameras on musicians from every genre and allowing them time to play to millions. Plus having a host like Jools usually makes it that bit more watchable.

A friend of mine went to see them last time they played Galway and with the exception of himself the audience was comprised almost exclusively of screaming 18 year old girls. Incidently the biggest cheer of the night arrived when the band anounced that "the next song we're going to play recently featured in an episode of the O.C." I also remember reading on these boards that the band faced a very similar audience and reaction when they played in Dublin a couple of days previously.
think i've seem them 3 times now, once in dolans, once in de barras (amazing gig), and once, post-oc, in the olympia. didn't notice any big difference in the audience, maybe i'm just not that observant! altho i think if teengage girls go to the gigs and enjoy them, then great. if they don't, they won't come back i suppose... the big advantage a show like the oc has when it comes to showcasing a band - over a show like later...with jools holland - is that it reaches a different audience from the music fans that will watch a purely music-driven show. so i think it'd still be just as big a boost for a band's profile to feature on the oc if there were more shows like later... or if mtv did actually play some music once in a while.

thats true, most people who watch shows like Later.. are into music anyway, while shows like the OC would appeal more to the casual listener. The potential rewards of appearing on a show like the OC are absolutely huge, it could break you. So while you may not agree with the whole corporate whoredom thang, if you were in a band with a fistful of good tunes and no real audience, would you refuse? The OC fans may only go to one gig, but if these gigs sell out/more records than they usually would, that will raise the profile of the band and bring them to an even wider (more acceptable?) audience.

I saw some of the bellx1 set in Tower records last week and couldn't help but overhear people around me mentioning the OC at least three times. Not just teenage girls mind but obviously they are gaining some new interest. I was listening to 'Neither am I' in work today and when someone asked what it was they were interested because it was the irish band from the OC. Now, 15 months ago they couldn't be arsed when I was raving about 'Music in mouth.' I don't care who is into a band or how they market themselves as long as the end product is interesting and challenging.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that being on television is lots of fun. Especially when it's some poxy f**king teen c**t s**te like the OC. I would have jumped at the chance to have my band play on Beverly Hills 90210, only fate snatched it away from me. The telly is ace.

dude... the introduction of Boyzone on the Late Late... what a pure pure moment for Irish music fans everywhere... almost brings a tear to my eye. The standard really has gone down with the kids these days.....
One of the most disgraceful incidents in the history of Irish broadcasting. Conclusive proof that this countrys national broadcaster was utterly corrupt and was over paying people to do nothing but do backhand favours for their buddies. A pox on them.

Nobody tell you people that everyone has a price? If the money's right then of course s**t bands are going to appear on s**ttier US teen shows as the hot band du jour. The OC making it onto an Irish music forum....as I live and breathe!

maybe i'm wrong, but i doubt if bands appearing on that show get much cash for it - it's not as if the producers of the oc need high-profile (and expensive) acts to boost their ratings. what the bands get out of it, and what most of this thread is about, is the publicity and recognition bands can gain from appearing on popular tv shows. as for the oc "making it onto an irish music forum" - why not? bell x1 are an irish band.

Well call me cynical but I'm sure they're getting a few schekels for their troubles, as for the publicity & recogntion they get I s'ppose it just depends on the kind of publicity & recognition they want. Some people are less fussy than others I quess.

Yeah, it's not like they had released 2 excellent albums by that point and failed to make an impression abroad thorugh the conventional channels or anything... Oh wait.

I have it on good authority that Alabama 3 recieved a "one-off" (i.e no royalties or repeat points) of STG£40,000 for the use of 'Woke Up This Morning' as the theme tune to The Sopranos. A quick bit of math for BX1 having a bit of a song (not sure how much -don't listen to BX1 and don't watch OC) used in one episode would suggest they're payment was a good bit downwind of that figure. Never know though.

That's a class tune at the start of The Sopranos. I also really like the song that starts 'The Wire', does anyone know what it is and who it's by?

don't watch the oc either, just seen bits and pieces, but what they do is they have a featured band every now and then as part of the show. like, one person says, 'hey, are you going to the concert tonight?' and the other says 'sure, man, i love bell x1!'. and then they all go to the gig and it's bell x1 "live on stage". i think they played 'eve...' as the 'live' song, and i think 'in every sunflower' was used too, just on the soundtrack. don't know who else has 'performed' on the show, apart from rachael yamagata, which i also randomly caught...

That's not how they were featured, I don't watch the show but the scene on which they were featured was the one that caused all the furore in the states because it had the realllllllllyyyyy skinny blonde/light brown haired one making out with some other girl. I believe that Modest Mouse were featured in the manner which you described.
