Firstly, VVG paintings dont cost 19:99 to buy or come discounted in Tesco with a chart price of 14:99, secondly, VVG produced over 750 oil paintings excluding drawings and though not confirmed, people say he sold ONE painting, the rest were traded, Keane will make maybe 4 albums in their career. The fact that a VVG work of art sold for over 80 million suggets to me that he is good, desired, appreciated & that was never in doubt. I would also agree however that selling over a million records suggests popular opinion rests with the band in question, particulary when the act in question is an Indie Act. I like Keane, nothing particularly original at all but I like them. Next!?
Ok then, this is my point in a condensed manner. It doesn't matter how many or how few records any artist sells in my opinion. Commerical success (or lack thereof) does not have any relevance to the intrinsic quality of music. Blind Willie Johnson sold nowt Eric Clapton has platinum discs on his wall If you Keane etc great, if not ditto. So what. Next !

Keane, Coldplay, Norah Jones, Travis, Athlete, The Stereophonics, The Thrills, Embrace, Bic Runga, Paddy Casey, The Frames, David Gray, Starsailor, Damian Rice, Ocean Colour Scene, Dido, Turin Brakes, The Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Jamie Cullum, Richard Ashcroft, Katie Melua..... Can anyone tell what's the difference between any of these bland, inoffensive, lifeless, MOR, musically redundant c*nts?

How could someone put the likes of Jamie Cullum in with the likes of the Manic Street Preachers?!!?!? and then ask for someone to tell the difference... surely thats obvious apart from the fact that stroller has a true sense of love for all the above mentioned "c*nts"!!!

for me its about perspective. i agree with you on most of those bands though, however i have to pull you up on the MSP simply for the Holy Bible being one of my favorite recordings ever. judging by the posts, I could guess that we're all fans of bands that have acheived something great without commercial success.

Well said Mutch. We all have different opinions - shock horror. I like some pop music that is very commercially successful. Is that allowed?

There is an argument to bemade here that the MSP who made Holy Bible were actually a different band than the MSP who made This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours

Keane, - write nice songs, not too adventurous, have a slightly different setup to normal. Coldplay, - write nice songs, kinda adventurous, veer slightly towards MOR but try Norah Jones, -writes lovely soulful songs, not adventurous Travis, -write nice songs but don't really deviate from their style Athlete, -write nice songs, try to be experimental, have become blander The Stereophonics, -boring The Thrills, -write nice songs, boring Embrace, -boring Bic Runga, -writes lovely soulful songs Paddy Casey, -writes nice songs, boring The Frames, -write nice songs, adventurous, boring David Gray, -writes nice songs, not adventurous Starsailor, -boring Damian Rice, -writes nice songs, not very adventurous Ocean Colour Scene, -boring Dido, adventurous, boring Turin Brakes, -boring The Manic Street Preachers, used to be adventurous, now boring Oasis, -boring, not adventurous Jamie Cullum, -writes boring songs, boring Richard Ashcroft, -boring Katie Melua, -kinda boring, not sure.

As regard MSP, Good call Rev. Know your enemy was the closest after that. whats funny about pop is that super furry animals consider themselves pop, they try to make pop records (well thats a quote I read a few years back) yet to most people its rock or whatever. a quote I use to justify myself liking some blatantly sales orientated pop was when Mike Patton was asked about how he could work with people as diverse as bjork to dave lombardo from slayer (among a few hundred more I'd imagine) he simply replied "I love music, why limit yourself?" think I've posted that before, it often comes to my mind. like the voices! ;)

So I insult them because I love them? Tell me, when you were in senior infants were you one of those kids who used throw stones at all the girls you fancied in the playground? The Manics are being compared to Jamie Cullum because neither of them have released anything other than bland, boring MOR sh*te in the last five years. You're only as good as your last album and no band can go around living off past glories when the man who was responsible for them disappeared ten years ago. For the record I was a big Manics fan back in the day and I still have about five of their albums. I think Motorcycle emptiness is a classic, I really like parts of Gold Against The Soul and I recognise that The Holy Bible is the best thing they ever did. I even have fond memories of Everything Must Go. But over the past decade they've just mutated into the Lighthouse Family with Guitars. They're the kind of band that your 30-something accountant uncle would listen to in his car when he's driving out to the golf club on a Sunday. It all went down hill when they started doing Wham covers...

We could talk about this for 100 years. Everyone has different opinions, One person's Jamie Cullum is another persons Bic Runga. Can we stop talking about it?

I fully expect to see MSP latest offerings on the next 5 CD 'Driving Anthems' set. That said, MOR sells. Didn't David Gray sell something like a million copies of White Ladder here? That means that 1 every 4 of you have a copy. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! Hang your heads in shame.
