The Beta Band are one of those bands who ive ear marked to go see live for a long time. Ive always heard good reviews of them. Id say ive only ever heard one or two of their songs but ive still had an urge to catch them live...maybe its the "High Fidelity" connection. Duno Anyway, since tonight is the Irish gig of their farewell tour, ive decided to finally catch them live. But if they are really good, it will probably annoy the hell out of me since its their last ever gigs. Anyone else heading along

Never saw the Beta band live sadly, but I got a loan of a copy of the three EPs recently and to be honest, I still can't see what all the fuss was about. I think they're a bit overrated to be honest.

They are much better live in my humble opinion but having said that I think they are going out on a high note with their Last album Heroes to Zeroes, it's more rockier and less trip-hop. Still and all Binokular, pity you're missing them though.....

I really liked Hot Shots II, it's just a really nice album...easy on the ear. Binokular I'd say you'd like the singers other project...King Biscuit Time - an EP called 'No Style' - verrry good

I'd nearly buy that for the band name and title alone.

The gig was excellent. I really enjoyed it even though i only recognised about 3 songs. One of which was one of those "do these guys sing that song" moments. The place was packed and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. I even picked up a tshirt I wandered up to whelans afterwards and endured what was the worst dj set ive ever heard in whelans. I reckon the dj thought he was in the palace

Yip gig was fantastic...... Played all the tunes expected of them, she's the one, dry the rain, even the double drum solo bit was fabulous. And they did the song with the dog barking, for the life of me cannot remember the name of it....a wee bit hungover this morn.

The only song of theirs I've heard is Dr. Baker, which is oddly good and quite addictive. What's the rest of their stuff like, in comparison?

Klootfan mentioned that he/she (not making that mistake again) went up to Whelans after the gig and the DJ set was terrible. Anybody recommend somewhere in Dublin for good music? Any good indie/rock/blues/alt country/basically decent music DJs doing regular slots?

Ray in Anseo (Camden Street) usually plays good stuff on a Thursday night from about 8pm (Carnival is also up that end of town adn usually plays good music)and there's good music in the Dice Bar on a Saturday night (down near Voodoo on the Quays) too. Sin é, also near Voodoo, plays ok stuff on a Fri/Saturday night too.

A few months ago I went in there one Saturday evening on my own around 7-ish and the place was deserted. I wasn't really in the mood for the reggae stuff that the guy was playing at the time so I stuck on my discman, the DJ was looking at me with daggers for eyes.

Gar..so as to avoid confusion, tis of the male gender that i am. I think ive miss-titled someone on this board before myself I like the place below the oak/thomas reeds on dame st. The DJ there plays a bit of everything, including some pearl jam, snow patrol, killers, interpol, kings of leon. That thursday night in whelans was definitely the worst DJ set i had heard there in a while. Normally thursday/friday is a safe bet. He played Pink for gods sake. I honeslty thought that he was supposed to be in the palace next door..
