While poking around YouTube for videos of bands I noticed that US chat shows (Letterman, Conan O'Brien and the like) seem to have a lot of performances by hip indie and alternative bands - Grizzly Bear (perhaps why they went top ten Stateside?), St Vincent, Andrew Bird and the like. If there are any American readers here, can you tell me if this perception is correct? I think it's great that such non-mainstream music gets mainstream air-time.

In Ireland, have there been any decent bands on the Late Late Show, version Tubridy? (I am in exile and far from the Late Late and Barry's tea and Club Orange and the like.

Here's Andrew Bird playing 'Plasticities' on David Letterman in 2007 - at the end it seems like Letterman genuinely got a kick out of the song and performance:

There are indeed a tonne of good bands play these shows, the National, Spiritualized, Flight of the Choncords. The US talk shows, are they on every night, or once per week? If nightly, then the chances are they will show as many cool bands as not. As regards The Late Late Show, I remember seeing The Walls play it, but I wouldnt watch it too often, honest.

I think those shows are at least four nights a week - but even so, it's hardly as if there aren't enough bands to go around in the USA. I remember watching Conan O'Brien quite often back in the day and he usually having decent acts of all genres on most nights.

The Walls might be going back a couple of years, PQ.

I love the way the drummer's foot keeps tapping at the invisible bassdrum!
