Hey - I’ve just joined Cluas but been a browser for a good while, just wondering if anyone here has any info about the good venues/bands etc in Melbourne, going to Australia for a year, will be living in Melbourne for a few months so I wanna try and go to decent places, any advice would be much appreciated.

Hello down there! CLUAS has a Sydney-side blogger: look for his 'Short Cuts' blog in our blog section above and perhaps he'll have some links and info that might help you in Melbourne. (I'm in Paris myself, so I'm not much use to you, I'm afraid...)

Ooh where can I start, Melbourne is the best city in the world for live music.

    Great venues:
    The Espy in St Kilda
The Prince Of Wales in St Kilda
    The Corner in Richmond
    The Evelyn in Fitzroy
    The Tote in Collinwood
The Ding Dong Lounge in the city centre
East Brunswick Club in E Brunswick

    Great bands:
    You Am I
    Dallas Crane
    78 Saab
    Machine Translations
    The Panda Band
    Peabody
    Sarah Blasko
    The Drones
    Dappled Cities Fly
    Old Man River

I could go on for hours... Listen to Triple J for great music, the website has really good gig listings: http://www.triplej.net.au/

    Enjoy Melbourne, ya lucky bastard...

Agreed: I saw them at the Olympia in Dublin years ago supporting the Lemonheads (I mean, they were supporting them, not me) - hard-rockin' mayhem, great stuff. If you can see them live you're lucky.

It's been a couple of years since i've been in melbourne but St. Jeromes in the city was a good place for urban music. Manchester lane was also pretty good for up and coming local acts of a more laid back variety. Fitzroy is fantastic for live music though. There's a load of little bars with live music most nights. I'm in Newcastle through work now though... music scene hear doesn't even come close to Melbourne but triple J is always a good bet to find good music and fairly comprehensive listings. There is also a few free music mags that you can pick up around the place that let you know what's going on. If you look out for the drum media or the bragg you won't go far wrong

Did you see them this time last year in the Village Aidan? I've worked with the singer a couple of times in the past, outstanding guy and great group of lads, incredible live as you say. Some ridiculously badly edited footage of the interview I did with him & his mate here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPS2KwUcE-s Like trying to tame a couple of errant schoolboys.
