    Una,

Good to see that you at least got the log in and password retrieval to work! But to your problems viewing the site...

To try and suss this I need more info from you. Can you send me the following info:

    • Type of web browser you are having these problems with (Internet Explorer? Firefox? Safari? Opera? Other?)
    • What version of the browser is it? (get this info by going to Help -> About in the browswer's main menu. It may give loads of figures for version number, all I need is up to the first decimal place, e.g. version 5.5 etc)
    • What operating system are you using (Windows, Linux, Mac) and which version (XP, windows 2000, etc).

What would also be hugely helpful is a "screen dump" of the problems you are seeing. Go to a page that is looking wonky and hit the "ALT" + "Print Screen" buttons ("Prt Sc" on some computers). Then go to your word processor and hit paste (or CTRL + V) and a copy of what you saw will be in the doc). Send me that word document in email (eoghan@cluas.com) and I will be able to clearly see the problems in action and I can then - if necessesary - follow up with geeks via support forums out there for this technology). This is just the sort of feedback I need to fine-tune this technolgy. So yeah, the info & screen dump would be a huge help.

    Cheers.

I'm having similar problems viewing the site. All i see when i load it up is the blue background; nothing else. If i scroll down sometimes you can see the menus but then they disappear and they are all messed up anyway. Internet Explorer version 5.0 This is on a Mac G3 on OS 9.

    Tommythekatz,

Thanks for the detail on the issues you have. I am looking into it. In the meantime I have to say that - pre-roll out - I have put alot of effort into chekcing the new version of the site and forum for backward compatability with different browsers and OS platforms. Have to say that while I did check for how things looked in IE5, I did not check for Microsoft's IE5 running on a Mac of all things! Are you sure you don't want to upgrade to a more modern browser? Firefox or Safari? And not just for CLUAS, your general browsing experience will improve dramatically (IE5 was after all released in 1999 which is, like, 7 years ago by the clock on my wall here).

    Keep the feedback coming.

By the way check out this screenshot of the new CLUAS discussion forum running on Internet Explorer version 5 ("IE5") on Windows XP. While there are a few things out of place it looks fine. Running IE5 on a Mac is an unusual / rare thing to be doing in late 2006 and - unfortunatley for tommythekatz - it seems that viewing the board is compromised in that environment.

Like any webmaster making use of the latest technolgies I need to be pragmatic and ensure that the new site works in the most common browsing environments - trying to ensure a new site using cutting edge technologies works in all browsers on all operating systems, is a near impossible task. I have therfore been focussing efforts instead on ensuring CLUAS works in the most common broswer/operating system set ups in use today.

Una - what is your set up? Let me know!

    Eoghan

PS - Check out this screen capture of the discussion board running in the Safari browser on Mac OS X. Works perfect.

To get your password go to this page and enter your original login id from the 'old' board and hit 'send password'. That will send your password to the email address associated with your login id. If that email is no longer active you will not be able to get the password. If this is the case email me with:

    • your previous user id,
    • the 'inactive' email address
    • your new email address

I will then look into making the cahnges to the database to get you set up with your 'old' profile in this new board.

I'm on Internet Explorer, but I'm also on a Mac, so that's where the problem lies, I presume.

    Una,

I'm guessing then that it is version 5 of Internet Explorer ("IE5") that you are using on your Mac (as version 5 was the last one done by Microsoft for Mac). So that's nailed the problem then:

Inetnet Explorer 5 on a Mac blows the new CLUAS site all wonky

So two members here have that configuration, but it looks like Una and toomythekatz are very rare and exotic browsing beasts considering that - based on recent browser use statistics - only 3.2% of all computers browsing the interenet are using IE5. A figure that - month-on-month - is dropping. And that 3.2% includes IE5 running on both Windows and on Macs. The proportion of people using using IE5 on a Mac is therefore tiny, most likely well under 1% of all those surfing the web. (And those running IE5 on Windows will have no problems seeing the new CLUAS website as testified by this screen capture).

Way back in 2003 Microsoft announced (details here) that they were going to discontinue Internet Explorer for Mac (version 5 was the last version). Microsoft stopped releasing security fixes for Internet Explorer 5 on the Mac in December last year so users still using IE5 are exposing themeslves to security risks as well. Microsoft themslves expliclty recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari. So I'd say anybody running Internet Explorer on a Mac is long due an upgrade to Safari (or to Firefox for Mac)!

I've noticed that every time i visit the site i have to login, rather than being remembered. No hassle really just wondering if there's a reason?

TommytheKatz & Una & others lumbered with Internet Explorer 5 on a Mac,

I did a bit of research. The consensus is that the browser recommended for older Apple Mac system (running Mac 9 operating system) is "iCab". Check out this page for such a recommendation. iCab can be downloaded here. If anyone does install iCab let me know how the CLUAS discussion forum looks on it (and if it works!)

Earlier today I configured it so that if you click on 'Remember Password' when logging in, your password will be 'remembered' on your PC (via a 'cookie') for 48 hours. Previously the 'cookie' was set to expire after 60 minutes if you chose 'Remember Password'.

Let me know if users are seeing any differences now on this front.

    Good news!

I was "remembered". Is there any reason why you set the expiry at 48hours? On various other websites I use regularly (like the chess site we're on), it "remembers" me with no expiry. For a lazy logger inner like me, this is a good thing.

Thanks for reacting so quickly to these things. I'm enjoying the new format!

Hey Eoghan, Good on you! I'm now typing this on my Archiac G3 on OS9 using ICAB. The site looks pretty decent; just a few minor errors. The discussion board link at the top of the page is on a different line that the rest. But at least I can now see the site!!! Cheers!
