My Bloody Valentine Loveless For me, my life so far is in 2 parts: before Loveless, and after. That's how important it was. I was 16 and I must have listened to it daily for a full year. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing: this extraordinary, beautiful, mindblowing sound. I knew then that music was going to have a profound effect on me for the rest of my life, but it also woke me up to the fact that art can provide this whole new dimension to your existence. Up until then it was just football, school, girls...the usual teenage preoccupations, then Loveless came along and changed everything.

The first Crowded House album. I'd been a music nut since my teens but that album was the one that finally made me realise that I wanted to be a songwriter myself.

the first record to actually make me get more deeply involved with music was yank crime by drive like jehu, released in 1994, and which today i still ranks as the finest punk rock hardcore rock record ever made. it made things like beefheart make sense to me, the guitar playing is extraordinary, yet never overblown and histrionic, just vicseral and thunderous. it's a hard listen at first, but check out some tunes on itunes or whatever. incredible work of art.

Pearl Jam's Ten. Altered the path of my teenage years quite drastically, stopped me listening to Scooter for one thing and turned me on to rock concerts and other noteworthy bands. Found a whole new world after listening to it. Completely changed my social life to this day in terms of friends etc. Which is why I can't wait for next Wednesday :)

I feel exactly the same way about it. It just took my whole enjoyment of music to another dimension.

Well it would have to be the first album that made me want to make music - which was The Bends by Radiohead

Yeah, was there also...it was great seeing TF and The Breeders, such great support bands in their own right, I thought Nirvana were slightly disappointing though!!!!!Kurt seemed to be miles away, only Krist and Dave Grohl spoke to the crowd. Little did we know......

Holy Bible would not be my first choice, I only got into the Manics during the Everything Must Go time but once I heard The Holy Bible and read the lyrics coz it is fairly hard to comprehend what the hell James is saying, it just opened up another world in terms of human suffering, tragedy and other things that left me feeling not so sweetly towards the human race.

If a record radically changes your life, you either: a)Were probably really messed up at the time b)have a pretty skewed and unclear set of values c)watched "High fidelity" too many times d)are a musician, in which case a, b and c above probably still apply. Aaaanyway. Records that changed my musical perspective: Kraftwerk - "Autobahn", when I was quite young, somewhere between 6 and 10 years old, no idea what it was of course or who the hell Kraftwerk were or what an Autobahn was. I just remember seeing this on RTE as filler when they screwed up the scheduling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wIfFGJoTjI In a world where TV still didn't come on until 3 in the afternoon, this blew my tiny mind U2 - Achtung Baby Quite a brave album for such a mainstream band. Awoke an interest in music that was avant-garde yet still fun and tongue in cheek. Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust / Leftfield - Leftism "gateway drugs" into dance music. Solex - Solex Vs. The Hitmeister - At a time when I'd become a bit cynical and bored with music, when I felt I'd kind of heard it all before, I saw "Solex all Licketysplit" played on No Disco. It changed my attitude in an instant, I realised that underground music ran far deeper than the likes of Radiohead (no disrespect to Radiohead) and that I'd only barely scratched the surface of what was out there.

Kratwerk - Trans Europe Express I remember been given the tape and thinking this is the greatest most advanced sound ever. I also remember hearing MBV - Loveless and thinking this was something extraordinary. There are a few well dodgy ones also

I'm terribly uncool. The first album to get me "involved" in music was either Something Happens (stuck together..) or the Housemartins. Made me realise there was more to life than pop :) ais

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah bpitch is a good label. To be honest I love all sorts of techno and electonic music. My favourite label at the moment is Border Community. I am still listening to Drowning In A Sea Of Love by Nathan Fake. I cant wait to see him at the EP. Should be class.

i'd listened to loads before Blood on the Tracks but that was the one which completely killed me. but there were so many other ones over the years. i firmly believe new albums are comig along all the time which knock you off your bike. for me, after dylan, the ones which stopped me in my tracks were bruce springsteen's "nebraska", public enemy's "it will take a nation of millions...", husker du's "zen arcade", waterboys "this is the sea", pixies "cmon pilgrim", marvin gaye's "whats goin' on", miles davis's "sketches of spain", slint's "spiderland", dj shadow's "endtroducing" and, probably most recently, arcade fire's "funeral".

this is difficult... i started buying my own music properly in about 86 and it was all u2 and simple minds... but really it was new order's substance in '87 that turned me indie... following that, i got obsessed with factory records and then it was a short hop to my next three big records: surfer rosa by pixies (88), bizarro by the wedding present (88) and retrospectively psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain (85)... then it all opened up

Relax Yoshimi, you're in good company. F*ck cool. I'm a huge Something Happens fan, in fact I happen to think they're one of the most underrated Irish bands ever. Stuck Together was never off my Walkman in 1990. What a pity they followed it with the dreadful Bedlam a Go Go.

I wouldn't class Unforgettable Fire as taking a risk...But 'Achtung baby' is probably the best band reinvention I can think of. Pity they've returned to their bombastic rock roots with the last 2 albums.

Cream 'Strange Brew' best of album At the age of 13 I would sit with a speaker wither side of my head with Sunshine of Your love thomping away - obviously the guitar in that song is spectacular but..... the drum playing in that song - mother of god! Developed a fascination with Cream - would do things like place their records in the recommended area in record shops. Bless..

I like Kid A better. That said, one of the best songs Yorke has made in a long long time is Harrowdown Hill. The only brilliant track on The Eraser.

Shall cause some controversy here. Each and every one of us has our own fav albums and fav bands and each and every one of us believes that certain albums are "the best ever duuuuuuuuuude", so here is my yo yo's worth. First album i remember listening to was Pink Floyd's The Wall and it did make me want to make music, howeverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... once i had heard Suede's Epic "Dog Man Star" , that did it for me, it went in at Number 1 in my favourite albums of all time chart and has yet to be displaced. Radiohead, KENT, The Manics and Pink Floyd have all challenged but, for me, just fall short of that sense of awe i get when listening to it.. Have nice wknd's and keep sending me demo's.. i luv's demo's!

Mark Cagney playing 'When Love Breaks Down' pushed me to buy Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout and at 14-15 that was probably the first alternative-ish music I listened to, if you don't count Adam And The Ants . Couple years later a friend gave me a tape of the first 2 Big Star albums, that opened up a whole new world of music to me. They were probably the first new major album events in my life....

This is tricky! The first album I ever bought was Southside by Texas on the strength of the single I Don't Want A Lover... I haven't listened to it in years. But the album that I saved for and bought and just kept playing and playing was Diesel and Dust by the criminally under-rated Midnight Oil. Fantastic band. They were my stepping stone to REM and more.

Being buying albums since I was 10... first was Abba Arival ( I was so ironic I didn't know it). However those that influenced me 1)If you want blood.... AC/DC (Age 13, the metal years). 2)After the Goldrush - Neil Young. (First post metal album, wider world out there). 3)The Orginals - Various Artists (Released around the time of classis levi's ad's mid 80's tie in/rip off, R&B/soul collection. Opened up the whole world of Stax, Mowtown, Altanic, rare groove, funk, Northern Soul etc. which forms largest single genre of my music collection) 4)Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk (Opened up the world of non linear, non vocal, freeform music, electonica, jazz, classical.) Sure there are others.... Peter

Was just remembering hearing the manics do "4st.7lbs" live on the Beat Box. I had never heard of them before and can remember the moment so clearly - sitting in my pyjames on a sunday morning. thought it was one of the most moving pieces of music i had ever heard.

First one that really springs to mind is Hunky Dory from Bowie. Was busying listeniny to crap before that and it was the first really different sounding tape that i picked up. Bought it for "Life on Mars" but the rest of it just blew me away and i got much more than i bargained for. Went rifling through the rest of his back-catalogue after that and went contemporary afterwards with The Stone Roses' debut which is also a corker. As mentioned by other posters different albums introduced me to different genres and soundscapes.

From 12 to 14 i was on a steady diet of metal from Kreator to Paradise Lost (still listen to Gothic every now and then) but it was when i heard Minor Threat - Out Of Step that i first realised people with short hair can make cool music too, this album blew me away and opened up a door that has never closed. Soon after i found the Butthole Surfers- Locust Abortion Technician and i was set up for life ready to take what ever the world could throw at me, happy times
