As it's only halfway through the year I'm only doing a top half-ten.
5. Cat Power - The Greatest
4. Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (It got a january release here right?)
3. Sunset Rubdown - Sunset Rubdown
2. Islands - Return To The Sea
1. Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds
My top 4 are all Canadian, what's all that aboot?

Funny, I'd have had YYY's in my biggest dissappointment section.
My faves so far have been Nathan Fake and Film School.

Aside from the ones already mentioned I'd have to go for;
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas
TV On The Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Hot Chip - The Warning
Howe Gelb - Sno Angel Like You
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
...and in terms of hip-hop;
Murs & 9th Wonder - Murray's Revenge
Ugly Duckling - Bang for the Buck
The Coup - Pick a Bigger Weapon
...and in term of albums that were released in their domestic countries last year but which only secured an European release this year;
Love Is All - Nine Times That Same Song
The Spinto Band - Nice and Nicely Done
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is solid but it's not a patch on their earlier efforts. I finally got to see them play in New York last month and it was one of the most anti-climatic gigs I've ever being to. They were playing in a massive room and with the exception of the front two rows no-one was moving an inch (and this was a home town gig for f*ck's sake). Their new material sounded very unexciting live.

It's boring.
They've totally lost their edge and the passion and energy that made the first album so good.

Not so. I saw both Jurassic 5 and LCD Soundsystem there in 2005 and at both gigs the entire crowd were going apesh*t. The new yeah Yeah Yeah songs just don't rock live.

What's with all the anti-YYYs comments. They're a GOOD BAND. Their latest albums has got UNIVERSAL PRAISE. What gives?? Of all the crappy, over-hyped and overrated bands out there you take out your ire on one of the few truly interesting bands and a pretty unique frontperson to boot!! Bizarre.

seen YYYs at Primavera a couple of weeks ago, turned out to be one of the highlights. Incredibly polished live and seem to be very comfortable in their own skin. Plus yer wan has great stage presence and charisma, added to the intensity of the whole thing...bounding around like an energizer bunny so she was. Will be looking forward to seeing them again at the lecky picnic. Also I think their drummer is a savage...subtle but really drives their sound.

Indeed it does, in fact I'm now existing entirely on a diet of maple syrup, imagining that the current world cup is being played on ice with a puck and sticks and only chasing women from Montreal.

I havent bought many new albums this year, but I'm pretty sure that either the James Dean Bradfield or Hope Of The States albums will be my favourite for 2006. Probably HOTS.

Hot Chips' "The Warning" gets my vote too. "Boy from School" is easily single and video of the year so far too. I'm also quite liking:
"Orchestra of Bubbles" - Ellen Allien and Aparat
"Skoda Mluvit" - Schneider TM
Quite a short list I know, not bought many new release albums this year, been buying a lot of retro stuff. Maybe it's just me, but the first half of this year has felt a little slow musically. Not bad, just not a lot happening.

not sure i'd fully agree with you there, antistar but the current hype surrounding them does seems a tad unwarranted
some tracks do come across a bit ordinary, a bit 'been done before and been done better by others'
i do like some of their remixes though
can anyone recommend some of their better tracks?
is the album really as good as all the reviews suggest?

I'd reccomend Playboy off the first album and Over & Over off the current one. It's funny that Antistar described Hot Chip as dire, Godawful, insipid, self-consciously 'quirky' tripe. I would have thought that such a description would be better suited to the new album by The Knife

Yep, on the CD single, great stuff.
As for Hot Chip being deliberately quirky? perrhaps, but they just strike me as fairly ordinary blokes with a well developed sense of humour who filter and twist their influences really well. It sounds pretty natural and incredibly joyous. It doesn't feel like "teenage" music either, which is refreshing in this day and age.
The songs are really well constructed but not formulaic and I really like the strong use of vocal harmony which is pretty rare in dance music. My current favourite track off the album is "No Fit State".

it's brilliant.
A bit of a strange one though, because individualy, the tracks sound a bit messy (apart from Made Up Love Song 43 maybe), but as a whole, if you listen to the record in one go, they all sound great.

can't be arsed thinking about this too deeply so i'll just name three brilliant albums that you may not have checked out...
charalambides - a vintage burden (beautiful, spacious, crisp, free-folk)
camera obscura - let's get out of this country (you know these guys, don't you?... if not, why not?)
volcano! - beautiful seizure (part noise, part indie - freeform drumming with some electronic (leaf label, you see)... vocals like thom yorke on the run from a mental asylum - just amazing)
at the very least, check out some reviews of the above - see what you are missing...
cheers

1 - Scott Walker - The Drift
2 - TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
3 - iForward, Russia! - Give Me A Wall
4 - Guillemots - Through The Window Pane
5 - Delays - You See Colours
6 - Hope Of The States - Left
7 - Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
8 - Thom Yorke - The Eraser
I'll add more soon, because I'm not allowed to add Amputechture or the new Cooper Temple Clause album yet.

After listening to the Guillemots album once, I didn't really see much appeal. There are far too many drippy ballads that are so slow the melody can seem tied together with sellotape. The upbeat songs are brilliant its just that its ridden with slow songs that don't really work. I suppose I'll have to give it another go because you all said it was good...

I find that whenever I listen to the album at a very loud volume, I hear more. There really is a beautiful ambience running through it. It's like a more poppy Sigur Ros in places. Lovely to listen to, though, except when you're in the mood for a bit of Dillinger Escape Plan.

1. Midlake - The trials of Van Occupanther
2. Clap your hands say yeah
3. Minotaur Shock - Maritime
4. Raconteurs - Broken boy soldiers
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - show your bones
Just got the Midlake album - its great. Really melancholic with good harmonies. Kinda like early seventies stuff from CSN&Y and Fleetwood Mac dare i say it but in a good way. Roscoe and Young Bride are standout tracks with great videos on youtube.com.
Not mad about YYY's latest offering - patchy at best. Turn into is the best song. But I still can't wait to see them at Leccy piccy cos of the singer. Saw them play on Johnathan Ross and she was magnetic.

Cheated hearts is the best IMO. I have no idea what Turn into means coz the chorus makes absolutely no sense and it sends me flying in all directions in trying to understand what the hell she's talking about. Anyone care to shine some light on this?

After having listened to the Guillemots album for a week now, I must say I really like it, even the droppy slow ballads.
Tom Dunne has been playing Joan As Policewoman's single for the last couple of nites and it sounds deadly. Waiting for the album to appear on Allofmp3.com but no sign of it yet. Yes I know, Allofmp3 and no royalties, but since I got burdened with a mortgage, my morals have went astray.
