Sun Kil Moon Tiny Cities Stunningly beautiful reworkings of Modest Mouse's album of the same name. Improves on the original. Cat Power The Greatest Her greatest so far. Takes a few listens but works its splendid magic eventually. The fact that she is beautiful helps too. Mogwai Mr.Beast Yet another masterpiece from Glasgow's finest. 'Friend Of The Night' is one the most earth-shatteringly sublime pieces of music since recording began. The rest of the album is rather fine too. Live, though, is where they really come into their own. And then some. The Knife Deep Cuts The birthplace of the jose Gonzalez phenomenon where he initially found 'Heartbeats'. Great electro-pop with lovely heavy Swedish accented female vocals. Tenner in Tower The Album Leaf In A Safe Place An ambient electronic album you can listen to from beginning to end without hitting the skip button. Sublime, dreamy, essential. Tenner in Tower. (I don't work for Tower!!)

I do like The Greatest a lot, but I still prefer Moon Pix. This week I'll probably be listening to "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" a lot, just like last week, and the week before that. After not liking it at all when I first heard it I'm now becoming scarily obsessed with that record.

Fiery Furnaces 'Bitter Tea' Still need to get used to it but like it so far. Pretty Girls Make Graves 'Elan Vital' Sharp, inventive and enjoyable. Gets better with each listen. The Album Leaf 'In A Safe Place' I also picked this up for €10 at the start of the week. A really consistent and impressive album. Minus 5 'The Gun Album' Excellent stuff. Cameos from Jeff Tweedy, Peter Buck, Glenn Kotche and Colin Meloy. But it's just one of those rare records that is well crafted from beginning to end.

Paste Sampler CD with new tracks from Sufjan and Flaming Lips, also stuff from The Avett Brothers, Shawn Mullins, Mugison, Neko Case and Modern Skirts. Also new Delays album "You see Colours", not grabbing me as much as "Faded Seaside Glamour" but still liking it. Belle & Sebastian "The Life Pursuit" and Loosefir thanks for reminding me of Andrew Bird, keep meaning to buy it, will treat myself this afternoon!!

Protein Biscuit - As amawaster said 'The Gun Album' would be your best bet about getting into The Minus 5 (www.minus5.com) Una - Are the new efforts by The Vines and Jinx Lennon any use?

Aren't the Yeah Yeah Yeahs the most over-rated band of recent times? I bought their first and was so disgusted at the yelping feel of it that I cannot bring myself to listen to it again. I'll keep trying with the new Flaming Lips this week...but I am finding it difficult. It's such an angry album to these ears. I'll also try Fosbury by Tahiti 80 and I've been saving 1970's Green is Blues by Al Green.

Yeah, bought 'Fever To Tell', listened to it once and I have never gone back to it since. There is only one decent song on it. They're another lo-fi, punky, ultra-hip NY outfit that music hacks drool over but on closer inspection the quality of the songs just don't live up to the amount the attention they receive. I like Karen O, though...pity about the music.

I have to say I really like Fever To Tell. I can understand being irritated by her yelping and all but I kinda enjoy it. I think Zinner's a great guitarist, or at least, gets great sounds out of it and the drummer's good too. Nothing to do with fashion, they just do it for me. Plus their slow ones are nice too!

Yeah, I think the YYYs output is a little patchy but even now I'm still pretty awestruck by the track "Our Time" from the "Master" EP. That guitar just sounds massive without being stadium rock, at the same time it has the kind of rich tone and color to the sound that most guitarists would kill for, yet it just sounds so effortless and natural, muscular yet suble. The drumming is pretty incredible too. This week, I 'ave mainly been listening to Billie Holiday, Ellen Allien Remixes and also have a CD by a German band called Tocotronic which I have yet to get around to listening to properly. Turns out I bought the wrong Tocotronic album to the one I wanted, bought Kook instead of Kook Varionaten) but I'll give it a spin anyway.

I agree with people on the first Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, it didn't make any good impression on me so I wasn't really looking out for their second album but after listening to Show Your Bones, it is pretty decent, theres a number of very good songs on it. I think that they now have some good songs to back up their well known name.

Gar - The Vines record is not great at all. Very patch and inconsistent. The Jinx one - more of the same - an acquired taste, but probably one of his best records to date

I liked their last album, but I think I prefer this. It's very well produced, completely eccentric, lyrically filthy with unusual sounds and song structures. And although I'm no fan of 'Comeback Girl' it makes sense in a context of the surrounding tunes that are quite carnage-filled. A brave and fun album.

Cool. I must investigate so as I liked the debut album alot and they're one of my fav bands to catch live. Does anybody recommend a particular Ted Leo + The Pharmacists album? Not sure which one to get first off.

I'm not the best person to ask as I've only got into them in the last few months and the only other thing of theirs I've got is the Young Team album and My Father My King but I've been enjoying Mr. Beast a lot. Given my limited knowledge of them it does seem that they've been playing with their hallmarks on this one, not everything ends in an eruption of noise. Have to say that in terms of post rock it's hard to top Explosions in the Sky's "Earth is not a cold dead place".

I've had similar problems getting into On avery Island (bar Naomi which is a great song) recently as I did with the second album. This time however it may just be that it's not as good. Thanks for hte tip Una.

A brief run-through of Mogwai's albums to date: Young Team: Excellent. Listen to 'Tracy' and weep. (7/10) Come On Die Young: A brooding masterpiece. Terrifyingly beautiful. (9.5/10) Rock Action: Their weakest album to date. Very uneven, trying new ideas that don't really come off but still has its moments of inspired genius, ie 'Take Me Somewhere Nice' (6/10) Happy Songs For Happy People: I bought this when it was released, Spring 03 and I've listened to it almost every week since.Never get tired of it. Stunning achievement.Their best album to date.(10/10) Mr.Beast: Almost pips 'Happy people...' as their best album but is let down by some filler.Still it contains 'Friend of the Night' their best track yet in their 10 year history, an absolute corker and one of the finest pieces of music in years...9.6/10) You gotta see em live though.First time I saw them in the Olympia in 2001 I was deaf for 4 hours and had ringing in my ears for 2 days!! Their recorded output is of course peerless but live they'll truly blow you away. An extraordinary band. Explosions In The Sky are very good too but you gotta check their first album '"Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever". Even better.

I've got the first EITS album as well, still prefer the second one. Thanks for the Mogwai run through, "My Father My King" is one of my favourite pieces of music, mind blowingly good. They're the only band to ever make me feel physically and mentally unwell. The first time I heard Young Team and "With Portfolio" came on and when it was over I realsied I was well on my way to curling up into the foetal position.
