Think hard on this one. Real hard now. - Who is the last Irish band to get you really excited? - Is there any of the current crop who can maybe raise that level of excitement for you? Around at the moment, I think there are some very good bands in Delorentos, Humanzi, The Rags, Wallmark, 66e, Director, The Marshals, Leya, The Urges, Dry County, The Mighty Stef, Channel One, The Chapters, Texas Galaxy, LOST, The Immediate, Michael Knight, Jove, Soft Cuddly Toys, The Blizzards, Ham Sandwich, Envelope, The Rubens, Jaded Sun, The KB Band, Havana Calling, The Fallen, Lucera and The Prescriptions. Of course, there's plenty of others who have been around for a while like Redneck Manifesto. But just focusing on newish bands, or at least one's currently doing stuff. Although I think the Redneck's are coming back early next year. You know what I mean anyway.....

I think that Pony Club over the last 3 or 4 years are the only Irish band that I have been truly excited about, be it a gig or a release. Either way they are brilliant.

Channel One are def one of the best Irish bands for sure. Others I'm quite liking at the mo - Betamax Format Dry County Dark Room Notes liking some of that stuff by Sickboy too. Oh yea and SYLVAN - their gig in The Hub was the first I've seen with their newest edition (Kieran Bonefriendly) Jeaysus they were good.

Soviet Filter are great and only getting better would love to see them getting on. Definitly one of the top bands I've seen. Probabaly still developing but would recommend them live Jenny Lindfors is definitly one of the better solo performers out there right now thoroughly enjoyable voice and songs ...and on the metal side of things (my personal favorite) there's a band called Epoch Rising that are playing some great NIN/FNM etc. type electronic metal stuf. If you're in to that. Stoat are fantastic too if you like to cast your net wider than the segments and pigeon holes that suit marketing employees.

Problem is they have been around for 3 or 4 years as Pony Club (not to mention a decade before it as Bawl and Fixed Stars) - punters aint interested in secondhand Morrissey mumblings about off-licences in suburbia, i'm afraid. as Gar wanted NEW bands, here's a few i think people will get excited about in '06... Delorentos - getting better with every gig The Chapters - still hold out hopes for this lot The Immediate - deadly live band Julie Feeney - really cool debut album, kinda Bjork-y DC Pakt - liked their track on that Faction compilation The Things - dunno if they count as new but I really dig them Windings - Limerick-based solo thing from Giveamanakick fellow Ten Past Seven - kerry loons Rastafenians - reggae-folk, believe it or not

Red Organ Serpent Sound from Derry are pure quality - just love the flamboyancy of it all and the tunes are great too - saw the Blizzards at Oxygen and was seriously impressed - I love Leya simply because they are quite grandiose and non apologetic about it - and yes despite my desire to not really be impressed I have had to give into the flavourings of Humanzi - at least the new single anyway!

Red Organ Serpent Sound are not quality at all at all. I saw em support dEUS and they were no great shakes. Fairly generic power chord rock with masks and a twitchy lead singer. Nothin to write home about, not that anyone at home reads my letters... :(

Definitely Pony Club, as Pony Club; Miles of Homes, Forecourt Flowers, Dorset St, Flakey Wife, F*ck with my heart.. all classic stuff.. Fixed Stars didn't really do it for me to be honest. Dave Couse with his new band The Impossible I am genuinely excited about, I think A-House were great and his 1st solo album 'Genes' was a solid effort but the new stuff is just class.. highly recommended even if you weren't keen on previous Couse exploits, just a load of great high powered pop rock songs... Who said the Chapters? Reeeeeally?? I mean, they're all right, they're just not great, very Framesy and nothing ground breaking..

the only two acts who are really doing it for me at the moment are The Mighty Stef n the Delorentos. other than that the urges are usually pretty kickin live, as are the revellions (who are in fact brand new)

yeah, Daragh, Mighty Stef is great. Subtonics were good too, in their Mighty Stef days. Dry County are pretty good (from the EP sound anyway) And actually 8Ball and Cartoon are pretty decent.

Are any new bands coming through? Seems to me that tipping bands such as The immediate and The Chapters, Dark Room Notes etc etc is a bit lame considering they would have been on the same list this time last year, which is the case with most of the bands listed so far. 'Newish' Irish Bands must mean a year to two years old?!?

Well the question that was asked was who was the last Irish band you got excited over... so although it would be great seeing new acts come under that, there don't seem to be many very recent acts that people are piddling in their pants over... Has anyone heard Organics? They're a dublin based jazz trio, not mad on jazz myself but they are quality, they play most Friday's in Slattery's in Rathmines (and tonight in JJ Smyths) and have a new album out 'New Light' with all original compositions which is good to see.. incl a cover of the Postman Pat theme tune! www.organicsmusic.com

Soviet Filter: I loved the name of the band as soon as I heard it! Still think it's a great band name. Class band live too. http://artists.cpu.ie/bands/31/ Got introduced to The Chapters in the last few months and I really really like what those guys are doing. Still have to get round to seeing them live though. Hopefully will get to one of their upcoming shows. www.thechapters.com Skylight are another band that I've reciently come across. Didn't think much of them when I heard some mp3's! However when I seen them live they blew me away!! Seen them a few times now and each time they are great. www.skylightband.com They'd be the current lot of new irish bands that I've started listening too. Cheers Adrian.

Last Irish Music to make me damp? Well the last album by an Irish act to stick out was Simple kid, thats a long while ago now but nothing since then has really made me go wow!! Having said that I've not been in the country for a good long while now, so I'm a little out of the loop. Another to really impress me was Ronan O Snodaigh from Kila, not new on any scene, he has 3 albums (Tip Toe, Tonnta Ro, The Playdays), the first is all acoustic with a spanish feel to it, the second is a percussive album with a tribal feel to it, all in Irish as well, the last one, The Playdays, had a little of a jazzy feel what with a sax thrown in, and it's playful, as the album title suggests - very under exposed in my opnion - saw him in the Crawdaddy early last April and he blew my sox off. I'm really looking forward to hearing a second RoL album as the first one stuck out for me because it was far removed from everything else that was happening at the time.

interesting point bud, but also one which indicates that irish punters do give bands a decent amount of time to develop into something. theres a fair amount of time needed for a band to go from getting tipped here or on cpu.ie or other websites to been everywhere in the mainstream media. however if u go back to gar's 1st post which kicked this all off, u will see a load of bands there who really only emerged in the last year or 2.

Jedi Jane Cocaine Explosion from Belfast are getting better and better, really class act live-similar vein to AtTheDriveIn with more of a blues influence. PandaKopanda are pretty class as well...they make me jealous. The Upgrades-quality ska-great band live. Helper Monkey- defeating the giants of rock with quirky surf folk and great hooks, again improving with every live show and definately one to watch.

Firstly, if you don't get or like Pony Club thats fine. But as Normington pointed out they have amazing songs and I fail to think of any Irish band in recent times that to me any have released 2 albums of such consistency as Pont Club have released in Home Truths and Family Business. Thats what I think anway you say that Gar wanted this thread to be about NEW bands well ok, fair enough but others have mentioned bands that have being going for the same amount of time as PC if not longer. well, if u can't think of any Irish bands with 2 albums of consistency in recent years, u obviously dont get out much, heres a short list for u, eoin, because i like u...... bell x1 ("music in mouth", "flock") give a man a kick ("is it OK to be loud, jesus?", "we are the way forward") cane 141 ("moon pool", "garden tiger moth") autamata (*short stories", "my sanctuary") gemma hayes ("the roads don’t love you", "night on my side" god is an astronaut ("the end of the beginning", "all is violent, all is bright") there are probably more but those 6 will do for starters

gosh u are a sensitive little chap, arent u? oooooh, look at that stinger - "others have mentioned bands that have being going for the same amount of time as PC if not longer". will ya ever cop on?!? your mail was the very first reply! check it out. Gar wanted new bands not acts who've been going like PC (under a variety of names but the same stuff, more or less) for a decade or so with no-one beyond a handful of deluded folk remotely interested in them. its like sack - another one of those bands that irish indie fans are supposed to like because they have been going so long. we really should have a cull of indie no-hopers - round them up and whisk them off to the curragh or somewhere to be deloused and reprogrammed. the likes of Sack, The Walls, turn, pony club - under-achieving frown faces the lot of them

Yknow, three years ago, I would've had a list as long as my rather long arm to contribute to this thread. I genuinely mean TONS of Irish artists that used really get me excited (in the wholesome sense of the word). This would've included, say, Sundogs, Pugwash, Divebomb, Mumblin Deaf Ro, Blotooth(pre-Juno Falls name change), Fresno....loads loads more. But nowadays, not much has happened for the better. Some of them have disbanded, most are probably still together, but hardly any have made any waves. I'm not saying this is a massive failing on their part - they probably lived out their role to the best of their ability - and it was probably the only role they were ever going to have. The only artists that I knew at that time, and who seem to still have their foot on the accelerator, are Delorentos and Tadhg Cooke. They've been growing for years and are still getting bigger and better. It's just a pity the same couldn't be said for more of the artists who kicked things off during (or even before) that independent wave of 2000/2001. Of course, there are loads who have released a debut album/EP in more recent time, maybe late 2003/2004. Someone mentioned Mocrac - I think Cash is King is definitely a fantastic album and wish he had made more of an impact. I could mention lots more, but it'd kinda just make me sad. I think that I, for one, have started to become a little disillusioned. I suppose it was nice back a few years ago to think, however, naively, that all these great bands were going to make it to a certain extent, and I'm pretty gutted now as I realise that this ain't gonna happen. So that's why I've stopped with the lists of potential Irish superstars. It only leads to broken hearts, folks! ;)

Hello Roxy. I do agree with a lot of what you're saying but I think the latest PUGWASH album JOLLITY will propel them out of this land to far greater things and that has always been Thomas Walshs philosophy, he never shyed away from the subject of Ireland's claustrophobic music clique. So don't give up on THEM, this fan hasn't. SJ

Good stuff Mar, I think the majority of posters here are from Dublin so the conversation tends to focus on local bands - if people from other counties talk up what's going on in their parts we have a fairer picture of what's going on across the country - will check out your links.

Super Stanley 800 are great, my big regret is that I never got the chance to catch them live when I was living in Cork. Without fail, every single time they played, I had something on that evening or it clashed with another gig. Waterford band "The Heard" seem quite good too. Only seen them live once about six months ago and heard nothing of them since.

super stanley are AMAZING live - saw them last year and was blown away by them. was really disappointed by their album though - didnt have a quarter of the excitement or craft of the live show. hope the new one will be better as for the dublincentricity of this thread - apologies but the whole think global, act local nature of the interweb comes into play. unfortunately most who post here are based in the capital and hence why most of the bands mentioned are from here for outside the pale tips, did anyone mention The Flaws? Awesome band from Monaghan. And theres a great band from up north called V/Formation who are worth catching.

Have been following Pony Club's stuff since a hysterical interview the Cullen lad gave in the Irish Times a while back - his experiences of the music industry would scare the bejesus out of you. But he's stuck to his guns musically and in attitude - fair play. Betamax Format have a ballsiness I like - plus they work hard live and don't seem to have an auto-pilot function. On a more negative note, can anyone point me to one recent SONG by an Irish band or artist that will make my jaw hit the floor due to originality or energy or melody (or gravity)? It's a genuine question... have mouse, will travel in hope and hunger

Sniffee - "The Whistle Song" by the Mighty Stef is prettdy damn impressive lyrically, havent had a chance to listen to it on record (if its available) but it really blew me away when i heard it live. He has a song up on CPU called Liars, which is quite good, better live though me thinks. am gonna check out the dry county n channel 1 tunes when i get ze chance

Ta Johan, but TBH I'm not looking for yet another recommendation list of bands and singers, I'm looking for a song. I'm still looking for just three minutes of magic, one CLASSIC song by a current Irish act. Sure, I'm hearing good/ efficient/ well-recorded/ good voice/ fun/ pleasantly reminiscent of Bloc Party/ worth a listen/ workmanlike - but nothing even remotely classic. Nothing like the shock yer grandma got when she first heard Heartbreak Hotel, or the shock her toyboy got when he first heard Starman, or the shock their lovetwins got when they first heard Billie Jean. Think forward ten years from now - can you give me one song you seriously think will be remembered? Cos I ain't heard it yet. Don't mean to be harsh, but, as Eamo might put it, I'm only hearing League-of-Ireland material. Still looking for that tenth and last Desert Island Disc...

I guess if you only bother listening to one song then it cuts out the need for any other songs. Good work.

yeah you want some seismic earthshattering tune to kand on your lap so you can feel like you have borne witness to an equally seminal moment in rock and roll history. Then fingers crossed you might be asked to appear on I love 2005 in forty years time so you can indulge in some misty eyed reverie about how this tune changed your life and you never tire of hearing it. Your a wannabe fanboy looking for a band. Try a personal ad.

Just worked my way down some The Immediate MP3s on myspace from someone's recommendation - the last & least-listened-to song, called "You Reflected", is pretty damn special, I gotta say - much much stronger than the more attention-seeking "Stop and Remember". Dunno what it is, but there's something really open-hearted about their music...

The Waiting Room are blooming legends, can't wait to hear the new stuff. Am I right in saying that the sample at the start of Waller St is actually Charles Manson, its been wrecking me bin for weeks. Out On A Limb are seriously raising the bar in terms of Irish albums, fair play to 'em.

speaking of eircom league - if you'd popped along to a cork city match earlier this season, you would've seen kevin doyle playing for the 2005 champions, now scoring goals for reading at the top of the english championship. standard shmandard.

Dry County are my favourite by a good bit. Have seen them 3 times and they're quality. Really like The Immediate and The Rags aswell. All 3 have excellent E.P/Singles in Tower and Road records,i think. Definitely worth investing in. Heard a band called Envelope aswell. Was pretty impressed.

for the majority of the teams in there i'd agree with you. but then look at what wigan have done this season having come up from the championship - not just in terms of results, but also in the kind of football they've played. shows that quality can be found in all sorts of places. but this isn't a football forum. altho... could it be argued that the kind of attitude that sees kevin dolye called up to the ireland squad for the first time 10 weeks after he left cork city for reading is similiar to the way in which irish bands are not really thought of as being seriously successful unless they make it overseas? probably not...

why has nobody mentioned Hal(yet)? personally i think their absence in this discussion is consistent with the fact that most, if not all the bands mentioned are going nowhere. most of the bands mentioned are big in dublin which is lets be fair or at least honest with ourselves, not much to write home about. Does the phrase big fish in a little pond mean anything? if the bands mentioned (and I exclude Director, The Blizzards, Humanzi and maybe the marshall stars) were any good, why have they not been picked up by a major? you can make all the excuses you want, but realistically if they were good enough they would be picked up. im not saying these bands are particularly bad, though some are, they just aren't good enough. some one mentioned a big list of bands from a few years ago that he/she thought would be big. all those bands are gone now. why is that? much the same will happen with this current crop. not due to bad luck. they cant sell enough records, why? because the music just is not good enough. and i dont want to hear any bulls**t excuses that people just dont get them. people dont bother trying to get them. music isnt a puzzle. the best irish album of this year: Hal, by a long long way. they have never really bothered with the Dublin/Irish scene, what the point, all it is, is a lot of big fish in a tiny pond. in a few years you will realise most of the band you are gettin so EXCITED about are not making it because they are crap

i think Director are really good. like Hal and the thrills as another example, they shyed away from/ didnt bother with the dublin scene. i think their music, at least the little ive heard is very strong. they dont have the swagger of other dublin bands but instead they have solid songs. the marshall stars are very good too. The Blizzards have a chance too but to be honest im not a big fan. their songs chop and change far too much. thats just my opinion of them though and they in fact seem to be breaking through. another good band are the 747 aka the fluid druids. they got a major deal a year or so back, think they are recording(?). hopefully they'll come out with something really good. i just think being big in dublin is a poor indicator of being any good. if you are big in dublin it generally implies you are not big elsewhere which then begs the question why not. of the best bands ive seen come out of dublin, Hal Melaton director the thrills 747's, none of them were big in the dublin music scene. its not a healthy thing to observe. Dublin is a very clicky music scene which clouds a lot of peoples judgements.

yeah, i hear ye, i get the impression that lots of these dublin bands just have a load of mates and contacts in the dublin scene and in dublin, at least, it seems contacts can be of more benefit than talent...HWCH for one! on a less relevant note, i cant say i think much of the bands listed in that post either, i aint ever heard of 747 though...???

Of course, most of these bands are not good enough to 'break'. That is because they are local bands, small town bands, whatever - it's the exact same in every city. You only need one good single to 'break' - and what is 'breaking' anyway? I don't think there really is an all encompassing scene at the moment, and anyway , the scene is only ever the largest collection of people in a specific genre. It looks like a scene because there are a lot of people involved, but really, there's only really 10 or so. The last one to speak of was the loose collection of The Frames, David Kitt, Damien Rice, Mic Christopher, Mundy - and the only one who broke through was Damien Rice really.

I remember them when they were the Fluid Druids. My old band came second to them in a battle of the bands a few years ago (not BITTER though). Honestly though, aside from dressing like mad s**tebags I didn't think they were that good. It'd be interesting to hear what they're like now.

Looking forward to hearing a 747's album. Agree with Gar, amazin live band. Last I heard they were in Liverpool gigging and rehearsing the album tracks. But dunno if they've recorded yet. Hope they can get the energy of their live performance into the studio.

What about those hard working bands who make great music and give excellence live performances. Yes they may be from Ireland but that doesn't mean we can't recognise a good tune when we hear it. I'm thinking Channel One, Stanley Super 800, 66e, Betamax Format, there are more. Bands who are making exciting music, experimenting with different instruments and have all worked really hard. I think they don't get enough recognition on this site. Well not on this thread anyway. You don't even need to leave your sitting room to find great Irish music, check out myspace.com, you might be pleasantly surprised. Not every band is represented on every single Irish forum board. We all need to stop complaining and make an effort to go out and find fresh music!

I've never seen why this is seen as praiseworthy thing in a band? This working really hard thing? Gets mentioned time and time again by lots of people (so I'm not taking a pop at you personally illyad). Whatever happened to slacker culture? Yeah its good that a band practice enough to be good, but no-one cares how much work you've put in, as with any other art, they only care about the end result, how good your last gig or last record is. In fact, really great musicians often make it seem so effortless. (I know, it's not really), but can we drop this whole "hardworking thing", seems a bit puritan. Sorry about the rant, but it's been bugging me for ages.

Well I think the hardworking thing is real important to mention. When I pay money to see a band, I wanna know that they've had the courtesy to put the work in. VERY VERY true though, that lots of people work hard, but its pointless work. But there's others who work hard, and do the right work, and then get somewhere with it. Not just musically, but in promoting themselves, and showing that they give a crap and they wanna make something of themselves. Case in point: Delorentos. Anyway, as far as being blown away is concerned, I would say FRED. they are awesome. Keep an eye out for TKO too I'd say................ yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!!!

On the subject of supporting new Irish music: Jape and Stanley Super 800-trustmeimathief christmas 'split single' Last year (on Christmas Day to be exact!) Irish Independent label Trust Me I'm A Thief Records became the first record label in the world to release a record on Christmas Day! It was actually an internet only release that was uploaded to their site at 2:00pm on Christmas Day. It was a two track Split Single available in MP3 and Windows Media Audio featuring "Schroedersound" & "Beautiful Unit", priced at €1.75 - with cover artwork available to donwload for free. This year they are planning on doing something similar! At 2:00pm GMT on Christmas Day they will be releasing another "Split Single". It will feature two tracks again, one from "Jape" and the other from "Stanley Super 800". In keeping with the seasonal thing, the Jape track is called 'Eatin Turkey To Make Music To Eat Turkey Too' and the Stanley Super 800 track is called 'Dark Angel'. This year the release will be only available for a limited period. The plan is to remove it from the site and kill it on Valentines Day, and it will never be made available again. So, if you want to support Irish music, while Irish Music works hard on Christmas Day to support you - log on to www.trustmeimathief.com from 2:00pm on Christmas Day and download the Trust Me I'm A Thief Christmas Release Part Two!! You will not need a root kit, there is no DRM built into the files, its a mere €1.75, it will play on any device. So on Christmas Day while the big turkeys from the major labels are getting their chins soaked in goose greese and reflecting on the profits of another year of tangible sales, Trust Me I'm A Thief will be busy and working hard to bring you music that you won't see splatered all over the Christmas Balls and Holly in the windows of all major record stores.

All those bands are on myspace too so just go onto their page and those tunes can be streamed.
Velocity- Aleko, was a collaboration with young Irish producer H3LX. H3LX has an EP comin out soon,i think.Well worth checkin out. Quality stuff!

Aha! I do believe I said "those hard working bands who make great music and give excellence live performances" which means bands that offer everything. I did not refer to bands who rehearse 8 nights a week on awful music and drag their 10 friends along to a sham of a gig. Just to clarify. And I don't like boybands. To mention some more worthy bands: The Radio Delorentos Duke Special Fred Waiting Room Ten Past Seven Rest All these bands and the bands mentioned by me above deserve recognition for their great music (which comes from their hard work and creativity.) Thanks for reading. :)
