I wasn't at the gig but have seen them play some explosive live sets before. Kudos to Ian for being honest and writing a balanced review though. I agree with ya about the album, it gets better with every listen.

Sorcha, Like I said at the end of the review, the audience liked it so that's more important than one guy's opinion, I'm nowhere near arrogent enough to think that I speak with infallibility on anything, it just so happen that I'm afforded a platform to air my opinions, even if (especially if???) they're contrary to what the prevailing view on the night was. The album is amazing. The seemless transitions between time signatures is unbelievable. I have listened to it about 15 times so far and my current favourite track is "Work with me". Overall the album is very very brave and uncomprimising and i have the upmost respect for the 66e. Absolute quality musicianship. The mix of soundscapes and melodic hooks is perfect. It intrigues you with intersting sounds and also gives you a hook to get into. The only thing that annoys me about the album is Brown Bear buts thats just because i own the E.P. it was on and got so used to hearing that version.

yeah the album is a little special isn't it!. That unmentionable magazine gave them 8.5/10 but it was tanya sweeney who wrote it and in my book she always seems to be pretty spot on. Potential there for a very big band to come of this.

Yeah, hopefully they'll get a slot at Oxegen this year on the New Band Stage or something. The album is pretty good but their live shows are usually top class.

It would be great to see them at oxygen. I think its very hard to get on that bill without a booking agent behind you which in turn are hard to get without a deal with an established label. For instance i heard that Juno Falls werent on the bill last year until some of bonos people intervened on his request to get them on the bill. I suppose without the big pr machine behind them they need some luck god knows they have the talent.

Best option is skip Poxegen - it's pure s**te, if you can get to another festival thats not run by MCD and the like - all the better. I wish someone would organise a decent bloody festival in this country

I disagree about Oxegen being so bad. Ok it doesn't cater for enough music genres but it still books some great acts. Plus the New Band Stage allows hundreds of people discover acts that they wouldn't normally be bothered going to see in Doran's or Whelan's. It can be alot better but last year was pretty good and I'm hoping more Irish bands get slots this year, the 66E among them.

I probably didn't really explain earlier about Oxegen - the talent booked is no doubt fine, because the same bands, DJ's or whatever play all the same festivals - and I agree that the new bands stage is good - although that will vary at every festival because local acts will play these......but having said that, it's not organised very well, there's always problems with the bar's, the "fun fair" is about as fun as a party thrown by Keane, the music from the fun fair is sometimes louder than the bands themselves. And a big jibe I have for it is that bands start at 12 in the afternoon and finish before 12 in the evening, it's not so much a problem with Oxegen itself, but maybe the laws of this country!! Why should it have to end so early, why can't there be something to listen to a little bit later and then have some sort of shindigs through the campsite - it's not that hard to pull off, in my view (which is worth pittance anyway) it either comes down to the man not wanting us to have fun or laziness on the part of the organisers - or a bit of both - and that is why I think Oxegen is crap - same applies if you call it anything else - even Electric Picnic was badly organised but it was a wicked idea. Mór is also a wicked idea, and it's probaly more well organised than both of the above, but why not throw the lot to gether and have a 3/4 day extravaganza like they do in all our neighbouring European countries??

Good points made. I still think Oxegen isn't that bad and when more acts get announced, I'll start looking forward to it.

The Ticket 18/02/05 66E 'Fall Down Seven Times Stand Up Eight' So, what comes after post rock? For 66e, an Irish/Scottish five-piece surely entitled to springboard from The Redneck Manifesto and Mogwai into undiscovered territory, their ''uncompromising'' approach has been to take all the stasis and portent of rock that refuses to rock, then cake it in sadness and add vocals. With the proverbial determination of their debut's title, 66e are clearly undaunted by shoehorning song structures back into experimentalism, and often they get away with it. When they rise above low-rent Sigur Ros droning, Scrambled Pictures, 66e Are Home and Meanings and Traffic are almost affecting. This is, however, an album that demands a love for metronomic guitars, eons of epic fuzz, then sudden, stabbing descents - not to mention an ability to indulge Edward Cullen's obliquely dreary vocals.
