Recent discussions on Cluas have touched on the sometimes purple poetry of our dear own Bono. The various remarks submitted made me wonder...what are the worst, stupidest, most inane lyrics in popular music ? If Bob Dylan represents the pinnacle of excellence in modern lyrics, who represents the bottom end ? Over to y'all

Oh, I dunno, how long is a piece of string? You can get lyrics that are so bad they're good. Millions of novelty pop songs. New Order are among my favourite bands of all time, but their lyrics are infamous for being bad, yet often the songs seem to hold up despite this. They still seem to get the feeling or idea of the song across somehow that I can't really define. Am I making sense or just talking drivel again? anyway classic New Order lyric, from the song "every little counts", Bernard Sumner cracks up laughing as he tries to sing it and they left it on the album: Every second counts When I am with you I think you are a pig You should be in a zoo I guess I should've known I'd end up on my own Every second counts when I am with you Every second counts

Remember that Baha Men song that went number 1 'Who let the dogs out' and then they just started barking. That has to be the worst song of all time.

I know it's almost a cliche for bad lyrics at this stage but that Desree song Life with the line "I don't want to see a ghost/I'd rather have a piece of toast" still cracks me up.

I think they were called the fast food rockers, or something to that effect. Just to set the record straight, I only know of this tune because I have younger (female) siblings. It was a chart song last year though. Curse their lack of musical taste

Again in the same Desree song: "I'm afraid of the dark, especially when I'm in a park, I never walk under ladders, I keep a rabbit's tail". Also, I thought a rabbit's foot was good luck not it's tail?!! The lyrics in that song are so atrocious she must have been taking the p*ss!

Maybe she means 'tail' like tail of the Bear on Hamstead Heath.

That'll be Joan Osborne's "One of Us". Bit of a harsh judgement there in my humble opinion - I've always loved this song, I think it's a good melody and the lyrics aren't the worst by any means. Then again, I did once buy a Nickelback single.

ah yes Joan Osbourne. "What if God was one of us/Just a slob like one of us/Just a stranger on the bus/Trying to make his way home/No-one to call him on the phone/Except for the Pope maybe in Rome." Brilliant, though my ability to remember the entire chorus must say something about the catchiness of the song. This may not go down well but that Damian Rice song with the lyrics "Stones taught me to fly. . .Life taught me to die" really does my head in.

What about that Oasis single from a few years ago, D'yer Know What I Mean. Something like, 'blood on tracks and it must be mine/ fool on the hill and I feel fine'. Terrible.

I seem to recall Desree saying that the song was a complete outtake, with the lyrics just straight off her head using up studio time at the end of a session. Still unforgiveable that it was released. My pet hate with lyrics are songwriters with a pataological desire to rhyme everything - Oasis being a case in point. Of course, there is that rare occasion where even the wierdest lyrics cannot drag the music down ... take the Pixies as an example.

At least many of the Pixies songs made sense when you actually understood what they were about. Like Debaser is about a surrealist film called "Un Chien Andalou" which was created by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali. No, I've never seen it, but I know they slice up eyeballs, er... lovely! "Here Comes your Man" is about a hurricane apparently, makes more sense now.

Thanks for that Binokular. I always wondered why Francis roared "I am un chien andalusia" repetitively in the middle of the song. I disagree with Vent My Spleen. Often the wierder the lyrics the better they are. Take Billy Corgan's writing for the Smashing Pumpkins for example

Un Chien Andalou was insufferable, ponderous nonsense, something I sat through in college...still one of the most comfortabl snoozes I ever had in a classroom. The eyeball scene was worth waking up for though - although the eyeball eating scene in I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here last year was infinitely grosser. Though I doubt it'll make it to any Pixies lyrics.
