With Whelan's too often packed, stuffy and uncomfy what is the best venue in Dublin...I've yet to see a bad gig in Vicar St. The Shelter sucks. Haven't been to Da2 yet though...Ambassador?

Being sentimental, I'd say Olympia. But I'm terrible fond of the Ambassador, so I am. MCD ticket prices are becoming increasingly expensive, its ridiculous.
Did Niall Stokes sell out his share of HQ or does he have a slice of the Spirit venue? Wots it like, anyone been there?

I like the Ambassador for a gig too. For rock gigs, the Olympia doesn't cut it. And if anyone's interested, check out downstairs in Issac Butt's (straight across from Busaras) on a Friday night. It's a good alternative to Whelans sometimes.

Good
1. Olympia (so many memories, never a bad night)
2. Ambassador (great sound)
3. Vicar St (for the intimacy if nothing else - bad chucking out policy though)
In Between
1. Whelan's (Great until the noisy club crowd get in. Grand for full on gigs but a definite no no for acousitc sets - anyone see Grand Drive there? Doh!)
2. Shelter (Bad sound & what is with the air conditioning on the right hand wall? It's like hot/cold tirture through a night)
Bad
1. Point (a barn)
2. Stadium (good 10 years ago but lots of good mid sized venues now it has had its day)
Long Gone (Honourable mentions)
1. Olympic Ballroom
2. McGonagles

Check out Radio City next to Isaac But - fresh new intimate venue - excellent sound system. January 20th Resolution End and Dave's Radio, January 26th Echoes of Pink Floyd, 1st February Steafan Hanvey.

Saw Tom barman in the HQ, quality gig that was. First time I saw paddy casey was in there as well..
Vicar st is up there with the best alright. That said ive seen some great gigs in whelans. But I think ive developed a touch of claustrophobia from going to gigs there as well.
Not much wrong with the ambassador, always good for getting up close. Only comment id make is its a bit of a trek from one side of it to the other to use the toilets and ohh yeah, the bar staff arent the best...i spent 35 mins waiting to be served there once!!! argg
The village. when not busy its not bad. when busy its...well bad.
The sugar club is great. you can see the gig perfectly from all seats. expensive beer though
The butt, well I havent been there since it reopened so i cant comment.

Wrote this somewhere else, I'll pretty much just copy and paste it here. Whelan's/Vicar st would be my choices though.
Seáns Venue Review
I likes:
Whelans - Best all rounder, great vibe
TBMC - big ass stage, cool set up, great sound
Sin é - Good crowd and vibe, a unique spot
Crawdaddy - Great sound, but just that bit too far away from town
Village - Just like TBMC, big stage, good set up, good sound
Doyles - just nice and stuff, at the Ruby Sessions etc.
Vicar Street - Savage spot, awesome.
Radio City - Cool lighting/sound. I dislike that whole area of town though, and theres glass in the ceiling where you can see the people upstairs dancing to the latest chart hits, which is funny/depressing, depending on your mood.
I dislikes
The Hub - poncy w**k, expensive pints. And I just generally hate it for some unknown reason. Its claustrophic.
Dorans - Headwrecking bouncers, lazy ignorant staff, s**t sound, and NO BUDWEISER!!
Voodoo lounge - s**t sound, more often than not s**t music, too far away, nice pizza though
Dunno what to make of the Sugar Club. Nice sound and comfy seats, but it's just wierd. No budweiser either. Is it really a music venue?

off the top of ones head..
The Sugar Club - nice and intimate, but the sound is crap, the price of drink is disgraceful , and the whole setup and vibe makes you feel like you at a college lecture, but a slightly drunk one.
Whelans - again nice and intimate, can take a while to get a beer, sound generally good but like others have said, crap for acoustic gigs, too much talking and that.
Olympia - Top venue, just the right size, been to many an awesome gig there, good sound, intimate enough for its size, only falws are the security who seem to be generally assholes, and the 6 person deep Q at the bars. otherwise it cant be beaten.
The Point - well what can I say, if you have decent balcony seating it can be alright, otherwise I dont care who is playing there, I wouldnt bother, many a disapointing night there, only ones that stand out for me are Pulp back in '96 and Morrissey in Dec 2004. s**thole !
Ambassador - I'll disagree with another poster, I always find the service at the bar really good actually, its a nice venue, for its size, you can get nice and close, but on occasion ive found the sound not being quite up to it. Still been to some good ones in the Ambassador.
The Village - Like somone else said, its good if its not jammers, for some reason you seem to get a really talkative crowd who prefer to hang back by the bar, Ive seen some awesome gigs there, ie. Evan Dando x2, Badly Drawn Boy & The Zutons, but ive been to others, ie. Josh Rouse & The Dirty Three whre the sound was all over the shop. ohhh and another point of note, of about the 10 or so times ive been there for gigs ive been short changed 4 times, or at least have tried to have been so watch the change folks !
The Hub - its alright for what it is, once again the drink is on the expensive side but where isnt.

Probs showing my age here but anyone remember the SFX? Now that was the prefect venue. Tiny square room. Stage at the front, toilets and bar at the back and friendly bouncers, crowd surfing was actively encouraged.
Seen Kerbdog, Placebo, Bush etc there, good times. Saw greenday play to about 200 people.
What a venue should be imo. Think they are tearing it down for apartments
The point is awful.

Nerraw I loved the SFX...spent many a night drinking cider outside trying to get the t-shirt sellers to give us freebies! First gig I ever went to was to see EMF in there! Ha ha ha ha ha! Saw RHCPs, Henry Rollins, Pulp and loadsa others...and nearly got trampled to death at a Suede gig there too, which wasn't very nice. Imagine meeting your end at a Suede gig *shakes head* ...dear oh dear.

I'm actually really surprised that more of you don't have a problem with the village... I haaaaate it. I have seen good gigs there, most recently the Frank & Walters which was top class but other than that it's an annoyingly shaped room, other than right in front of the stage you won't get a good look at what's going on from anywhere else. The sound isn't bad either but just something about the place.. completely lacks character. I'd prefer to be crushed in Whelans any day...

Jeez yeah, that Suede gig was nuts. What year was that again Dromed? I remember a similar crowd swell at the Wonderstuff there too. Those are the only two gigs I really felt like it was out of control and just plain dangerous. And that's in comparison to a Carter USM gig in McGonnagles where I got my front teeth smashed back into my gob, moving freely about at an obscene angle by some punter's size twelves who had jumped off the speaker stack.
Great venue though.

The Olympia and Ambassador are kinda the same. Sound can be a bit s**tty if you are stuck underneath the balconies. Have seen some rockin' gigs in the Olympia. Have a bit of a soft spot for it.
Vicar St is good although I wish the bar was inside the auditorium. You can miss a good song while getting a round in.
The Village is a dump and I have bad memories of when it used to be the Wexford Inn and we used to have Student nites there. If you think its bad now, you should have seen it back then. A real trad joint infested with Ra heads.
The Red Box used to have some pretty decent gigs in its day too.

the SFX was a great venue, simply because it was so s**te. Saw Ash there in 97 I think.
I like upstairs in the Village - good seating, great view of the stage, and convenient bar
The Sugar Club - only suits certain gigs because of the seating: standing ratio. But I was at the Howl @ 50 thing there recently and the club was the perfect setting for it. Plus, great cocktails.
The Olympia - the best venue in town? Unless you're stuck all the way up top
The Ambassador - can you believe it, I've never been in
The Hub - needs to forget about the constant refurbishing, make it into a grimey rock club and sell cans at the bar. Then it would be perfect, because the sound is the best for a small club
Crawdaddy - great. Really good sound too.
Whelan's really bad sound, generally annoying crowd, cramped set up, frequent over-crowding
Temple Bar Music Centre - The Point's little sister. Only good if it's jammers and there's a decent techno DJ
The Point - s**t in every way
Vicar St - an excellent venue. Brilliant accoustics and friendly staff

True, but the debate doesn't end there! For its size and for big sound bands Vicar St's ace.
But, for instance, that little place that someone mentioned, the Music Room on Abbey St (if it's the one I'm thinking of, above the Firestone) has a nice wee vibe to it - perfect for shoegazey/punk/antifolk music. I thought it had closed down actually.

Hub could be a cool little venue if they got someone in to run it properly. Its is one of the most loosely run venues going...sound is never gonna be great anyway but some of the gigs during the HWCH were class down there.
he ambassador aint that bad either, whelans is great but too cramped,
crawdaddy is the best new venue, if the club afterwards wasn't so bad it'd be the perfect venue. but for rock n roll bands, its a class little spot.

agree with comments bout The Hub - we need a sleazy rock&roll hovel like that.
I miss mcgonagles - i saw some cracking gigs there like sonic youth, dinasour jr and the house of love. i also miss the top hat - best gig ever there was nirvana supporting the youth there. but sure, thats old age for u
right now, i dig vicar street (best venue around by a mile), crawdaddy (surprisingly good for all kinds of bands) and the olympia (especially if u can sneak into a box!).
i despise the village (built by idiots for idiots), dont like whelans (can never understand why people like it so much - always ruined by either over-selling or too-cool-for-school chit-chat at the bar) and have a mild dislike for the music centre (could have been so, so much better).
i dont mind the ambassador but i know that visiting bands can't stand the place cos its nearly impossible to get a decent sound in there.
what about venues outside the pale? I really like Roisin Dubh in galway and think Dolans in Limerick is a smashing place altogether. Also the spirit store in dundalk is a wee gem of a live music venue. what about places in cork? havent been there in an age so any pointers welcome

maybe Cluas should take over the Hub and turn it into a sleazy rock club once a month. It's a very do-able aim.
And yes, the bouncers there are ridiculous.

cyprus avenue is grand now that they have air conditioning -except for the wall which prevents half the crowd from seeing the gig (tho they do have those handy screens for your veiwing pleasure should you get trapped on the wrong side of it!?)Pity they aren't putting on more in the half moon, besides those 2 every other venue has major problems, the savoy(sound), opera house (seating) the brog(too many to mention)...there's a good few small pub venues but we need something decent

Vicar Street - it's got carpet on the floor!, the sound is always spot on, no bar for idiots to stand at and talk loudly.
Crawdaddy - always sounds great to me. never any problem getting served even when it's packed.
The Olympia - i'm not so sure about the sound anymore but hey it's great when yr down in the mini-pit (i couldn't be anywhere else) and you look up behind you and see everyone upstairs going mad too :)
The Lower Deck - nice and comfy.
Ambassador - i hate it there. really pissed off Belle & Sebastian are playing there :(
Sugar Club - cocktails! it's alright like.
The Point - i wouldn't mind paying a fiver for a pint if i could hear the band alright. also DEATH TO SCUMBAG SECURITY!
just discovered The Boom Boom Room above Conways on Parnell Street. it mostly hosts jazz i think which is why i'd never been but a really nice place. would love to see a rock band in there with all the tables taken out.

The hub smells like cabbages. And there is no good place to stand to listen to a band and get a good sign. It's also really s**t to play as the room is so narrow the sound bounces back at you.
The sound in the village is very very hit or miss.
I've only ever experienced great gigs in the Olympia (although it's a bit of a neck breaker to be sitting in the upper circle.
The rubysessions gigs in Doyles always have a great atmosphere.
Crawdaddy has proven itself as a great venue sound-wise but I never feel the desire to stick around afterwards - the outside bar is just so pretentious.
TBMC - great stage, generally really nice sound, good acoustics, it's just so hard to get a good crowd there.

Whoa! back up there a bit! When did this happen? and why? I'm not even outta Cork a year and you're telling me the Lobby is gone? I used to live within crawling distance of that place and enjoyed many a memorable gig, like The Tycho Brahe before they became tychonaut, or Japanese punk-pop band eX-Girl. The placed was so hot hot when you had a crowd in, you could barely breathe in summer (especially pre-smoking ban) but it had great atmosphere and I loved the way the old windows rattled if the band cranked up the volume (it wasn't just good for intimate acoustic gigs ya know, though that was what it was ideally suited to)
I had though it strange that even though the place was still open, there wasn't much in terms of gigs and there didn't appear to be any flyers. The sad thing thing is my last memory of the lobby wasn't a particularly great gig. A really underwhelming tychonaut gig, no fault of the band, just a really apathetic audience, many of whom talked right through the gig, which is really noticeable in the lobby and totally contrary to venues reputation as a place where people showed a little bit of respect and listened

I've gone to some great gigs there (Caribou probably tops the list and saying that may be slightly less pretentious than the outside bar) but what really annoys me about the place is that they kick you out of the venue part on the dot of 11. I've heard that the club part of the complex is being converted into a largeish(Olympia/Ambassador sized) live venue, anyopne heard about this?
The stage is tiny though so I always think that it's quite hard for bands with more than 3 members to get into as they look so confined.

The Olympia and Vicar St stand out for me.
I think TBMC is underrated. Saw Mogwai there last month and it sounded brilliant. Probably helped that it was packed.
Crawdaddy's a good venue aswell. Whelans pretty good but can be annoying when its rammed.
The Village is easily the worst venue in Dublin. It makes no sense. Everything that could be wrong with a venue. The only decent thing is its location.
btw, Heard a rumour that there is a small live venue opening upstairs in Solas (wexford st). Anyone else hear this?

I haven't been to Radio City since it was refurbished, so I have no opinion on it. Will let you know when I do get to it.
Its Cluas, aka cynic.ie ... See that's what annoyed me, its not people who 'democratically list their favourites'. Its blatent plugging/advertising in the guise of opinion by a select few. Check out the below,& note the running theme .... All Hail Radio City.

Anyone see the Redneck Manifesto play there? It was rockin. Also saw The Tom Waits Tribute band Carnival Saloon play there with Juliet Turner and there was a really nice caberet vibe in the place and the sound was ace.

There seems to be a few different types of nights going on there. Heard through a mate of mine that they've a Midas System and he said that there are some pretty cool indie bands playing at Radio City in the coming months. The club will be open every night so there should be a good mix of events. The trailer trash night is only on friday nights. Apparently Jenny Greene, who dj's with FM104,is running it.

"Juliet Turner and Carnival Saloon are headlining a special charity
gig in Radio City in Store Street Dublin on Sunday May 7th along
with others. The gig is to support Terri Byrne who is suffering from
cancer.
In Feb 2005 Juliet picked up an Irish Meteor Music Award for best
Irish Female Performer, alongside artists such as Paddy Casey, PJ
Harvey and Snow Patrol. She has recently signed a distribution deal
with Valley in America and is working on her fourth studio album.
For the uninitiated, Carnival Saloon are to Tom Waits what The
Rolling Stones are to Muddy Waters. With a force of nature fronting
and drawing on spirits as diverse as Bukowski and Kerouac to Ray
Charles and Elvis, this is high octane musical theatre not to be
missed.
It will be the first appearance this year in Dublin by both artists
so it promises to be a special night."

Well so, I've never been to Radio City but I'm just back from the Bleu Cafe on Capel street - not so much a gig venue but more a blues/soul/jazz cafe. Nice spot - and with lots of dark lighting so your wrinkles don't show so much. Recommend. :)
