Westlife, Mumba and Kylie covers...never mind the wall poster! and now, after previously slating Aslan only to suffer a D17 backlash, they've given them a cover feature. Hot Press-a music-loving institution or a Louis Walsh langer licking MCD newsletter??????

Hot Press has always been and always will be a dung pile of mediocrity, a cheap NME imitation, totally out of touch with what's really going on with Music in Ireland.

Yeah, it's not really a music mag anymore, probably never was. It seems more concerned with politics etc which you can get from a daily newspaper. As for reviews ( live and album )- some appear in the mag weeks after the cd issue date rendering them irrelevent and some major releases they don't even cover. An example was the recent Tatoo the planet gig in the point. It was perhaps the biggest gig at that time and all Hot Press could do was a photo in the live reviews section. http://www.writhen.com

I know Hot Press isn't the perfect music mag but I think it's the best of what's around. It's soitianly not an NME imitation as the NME is complete shite and just keeps dictating what will be the next big thing. Yes HP has put a few popstars on their cover, I think it's dissapointing. However, as much as I hate Westlife, I actually enjoyed reading their article on them. It exposed them for the wankers they truly are. I've never seen any reviews published late but they do seem to be printed within around the release date most of the time. I do agree that their live reviews section does seem to miss a few of the best gigs around but they probably only go to gigs that they get special invites to. ] http://entertainment.ie

What really bugs me about Hot Press is there insistance on giving so much coverage to outdated windbags like Sinead O'Connor and Van Morrison who are well and truly past their sell by date. Its 'political' content is truly woefull. Preachey, humourless pap! JJ, your point about them getting Hot Press to attend gigs is not fair. By rights they should be out there looking for talent and helping out new and upcoming acts. ..Instead they seem give us 'ironic' interviews with pop stars and a f**cking social column going on about knob-ends like John Rocha & Louis Walshe. None of the music is exactly 'cutting edge'.

Well, I don't know how HP go about choosing which gigs to review, I was only speculating. However, when I saw Josh Ritter play a gig at The Shelter with Glen Hansard a few months ago, I thought it was one of the best gigs in ages and I saw no review in HP which was a little dissapointing. Also, I think HP is loaded with articles on new and up-coming acts. I haven't seen any articles recently on the likes of Van Morrison or Sinead O'Connor. ] http://entertainment.ie
