Just got a press release about this... CHOICE MUSIC PRIZE - IRISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR The Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year is a new award which has been established to celebrate and acknowledge the work of Irish musicians. Every single year, hundreds of albums are released by Irish artists in every genre, from indie, trad and pop to electronic and jazz. The Choice Music Prize aims to highlight those albums which deserve some extra time in the spotlight and, ultimately, to select the album which best sums up the year in Irish music Instead of using sales or airplay as criteria, the Choice Music Prize will focus, simply and solely, on the music. A panel consisting of 12 media professionals representing Irish print, radio and TV from the four corners of the island, are currently involved in selecting the Choice Music Prize shortlist. This will consist of 10 albums released by Irish acts for the very first time in 2005 which the judging panel believe deserve to be highlighted. The shortlist will be announced in January 2006. The Choice Music Prize event will be held at Vicar Street, Dublin on February 28th 2006. On that night the judges will meet to decide which of the shortlisted albums will receive the Choice Music Prize. Full details of the prize will be announced in January 2006. The Choice Music Prize is co-ordinated by Dave Reid and Jim Carroll. Jim Carroll will be the judging panel’s non-voting chairman. [Dave Reid runs Broadcast Mgt & Events, the company who also organise the National Student Music Awards. Jim Carroll is a music journalist with The Irish Times. The award has already received significant support from such industry bodies as the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA). www.choicemusicprize.com

yea just read about this elsewhere - be interesting to see what the shortlist for this is. Could be rather cool for smaller independently released records. Or it could be a load of corporate s**te. Strangely I'm hoping for the first.

Hopefully, the shortlist won't have any of those tousle haired troubadors, Jim Carroll hates 'em even more than I do, but since he don't have a vote, that might not happen. By the way, Kinky for Govenor !

hey jules, did u read that piece in the Observer on Kinky's campaign? we should do a Cluas for Kinky benefit, instead of those make history poverty banners, it should be Make Kinky Governer! for those who havent a clue what we're on about, the piece is here: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,1649842,00.html great article! as for the Choice Prize, i hope it goes to someone that no-one expects to get it. i'd say the front-runners will be the likes of Bell X1 or Hal, but we should also hope to see the likes of Dave Couse, Pugwash and Give A Man A Kick in the shake-up

Would you really want bands like BellX1 to be in the shortlist? I would hope to see it recognise some less known new talents.. If it's for the music and the music alone, it would be cool if some bands who are in a more alternative genre, like jazz, got some recognition. Even though there are many that are prominant in Irish, or even International jazz circles, it's a very insular scene and hard to get their names out to a new audience. Organics are a jazz trio who just released their first album, few will of heard of them except in small circles, yet they've been playing for years upon years, are still in their twenties and unusually, their album is full of original compositions which is great to see a young jazz band do.. Or the Conway Sisters, ya know some fresh new talent!!! ;D

good point nomington and good call on Organics - they play every week in dublin and pull a good crowd, that album got a good response too so something like this would push them on a bit which begs the question - what albums do Cluas think should be on the list? Anyone who mentions the conway sisters will have Rev Jules to deal with

Very true, all focus is on alternative as it means in relation to indie/rock music. Sad that.

so because there is no application process they are going to consider EVERY release including independant releases from last year?Maybe thats not a lot but I would think it is, how could they possibly consider everything when even bands selling copies of albums at their gigs etc count?

shortlist: Bell X1 "Flock" (Island) Cane 141 "Moonpool" (Exceptional) The Chalets "Check-In" (Setanta) Joe Chester "A Murder of Crows" (Barp) Duke Special "Adventures In Gramophone" (Hag) Julie Feeney "13 Songs" (Self-released) Hal "Hal" (Rough Trade) Nick Kelly "Running Dog" (Self Possessed) Emmett Tinley "Attic Faith" (Independent Records) Turn "Turn" (Setanta) nothing to quicken the pulse. I'd say Bell X1 are a shoe-in. Can't believe that Turn record is there.

Heard the full short listed played on Pet Sounds tonight after a disasterous surf / recce trip to Sligo, only Bell X1 sound like contenders, bought their album a few days ago and played it on the way up and way down today on repeat, what a fine record and not normally my thing.

i think theres a good few decent albums in there. it has the the who the hell is? factor for many people with Julie Feeney and Cane 141 - and both of their albums are excellent. it has a few big-ish names in bellx1 and Hal. and it has. well, Turn. fair play to the organisers for doing it. at least they got off their arses and actually got something up and running. and - bonus - theres no big corporate brand all over it like a rash.

i'd like Bell X1 not to win. im not anti them as such, their new stuff that i've heard is pretty good, it would just be a bit obvious/lazy/safe to give it to them. (though if they deserve it, they should get it, its unfair to discriminate just because they are successful) to undermine myself completely, i'd like if Hal won it.

Well on the web site they are fairly clear about the criteria, nowhere does it say debut album, it just says the album must have been released for the first time in 2005 and by an Irish artist, and of a specific length of recording- you also didnt have to "put an album forward" for consideration, i thought all albums that met the crtiteria were automatically up for consideration

exactly, it was open to EVERY album - not just debut albums. you didnt have to send in albums or pay an application fee like the mercurys. once the album was on release for the 1st time in 2005, it could be considered. seems very fair to me maybe the 12 judges just didnt think the Pugwash album was up to much. could happen, u know. or maybe its time Pugwash got a new PR if thats what he or she is telling u.

Hal are just another Beach Boys / Pet Sounds pastiche. Maybe they should get together with The Thrills and The High Llamas and form a Brian Wilson tribute band.

Call me a cynic .... On the contact page for Choice Award, FrictionPR are listed as the contact email address. Looking up the News Section of FrictionPRs site, they list news on artists, that I presume FrictionPR represent ... Bellx1, Joe Chester & The Chalets. http://www.frictionpr.com/news.html

Hal are an excellent band. and they put out a really good album. Personally i think some people on this site are music snobs, who hate to see any band get any reasonalbe degree of success and when they do, its time to slate the band. i would agree hal have strong Beach Boy (among other groups) influences but to call them "Another Beach Boys pastiche" is lazy. granted if you dont like them, you dont like them and everyone is entitled their own opinion. although i may be wrong in criticising you in particular, i feel these general types of lazy criticisms are often indicative of a group of pepole that like a band only when they are small but once they gain any success they feel the need to turn their back and criticise the band as if they are not allowed to be successful. (damien rice anyone?) The Hal album is actaually one of the best albums Ive heard this year at all. i think people on this site, and Im not necessarliy directing this at you( the writer of the quote), take huge pride in listing off bands that people have not heard of, as if this is some kind of one up man ship, and this is almost more important than the quality of the output. Whats important is that the band is cool, that do actually have some good songs, and that few people have heard of them. one final point, i think it is very interesting to note that these people are generally not in bands themselves and if they had been, the band was never very successful. they are purists who believe that fame can almost rob a band of its innocence and that any conmpromise to the big bad record company is tantamount to selling your soul. these people have little understanding of what it is like to try and make a career from playing music, and not a career while doing something else, but to be able to afford to live comfotably in Dublin while doing nothing but being in a band. ambition is ugly. i'm sure i will get slated for this opinion because most people on this site are music snobs/ a la High Fidelity. just to reiterate this diatribe isnt necessarliy directed at the person who quote im replying to, its more of a general rant.

Hal are a great band and the album is excellent with fine attention to detail. I saw them maybe twice last year, and they were the tightest band I've seen on a stage for a long time. Still, I enjoyed the Chalets record more, and they're also a fantastic band to see live, so they've got my vote. And while I'm at it: Bell X1 : the new album is a slide into poor form, the last album had a few crackers on it, Flock has none Turn: same old, same old, with their latest record more irrelevent than the last Joe Chester : good album, great musician, but not exactly made to be a star - lacking in effort perhaps? Cane 141 : never heard of 'em, my bad Julie Feeney : don't know her either, but I'm informed by a colleague that she seems to be quite something Emmet Tinley : a fantastic voice, maybe one of the best around, and a beautiful performer Duke Special : I get them confused with the Duke Spirit (change your name dudes), fine, but not memerable Nick Kelly : not a fan, but then again, it's not my bag.

I'm sick of people labelling others 'music snobs' as if thinking some music is better than other music is a bad thing. Generally, the people on Cluas are pretty informed, and don't faff on about bands that they're mentioning for the sake of seeming cool. Henceforth - not snobbish, just informed about quality, and interested in sharing their views, and informing others about bands they've come across. You're not a music snob if you think Bell X1 are s**t, you just think Bell X1 are s**t. Great things about message boards - you can't see if a member is wearing a skinny tie or not.

Hi all.....Please let me get one thing straight Mar et all. I'm not that senile or idiotic enough (I don't think?) yet, to sit here and post "Bah-Humbug I wasn't picked....." or "I'm brilliant HOW could MY record not get picked....." Not me my friends, you won't find me in Lillies, you won't find me ligging with anyone but my friends and colleagues, I'm not that sad and conceited but the facts are this..... 1969 and myself heard of this award. We got VERY excited. We thought "Here's an award for us to get our teeth into" Well done to ALL concerned we said. Well done to Jim Carroll and everyone who's involved. People who've put my music in their top 10 of ALL TIME will be judging - BRILLIANT. Let's send a package in through my much loved and respected PR person. Just as we were about too, an e-mail was sent to us stating that the competition was open to debut albums only. BUGGER I said.....but fairs fair. The list comes out and I get a little shall we say piqued. AND WHY NOT for f**ks sake, I would have been proud to see my work there, maybe even shift a few more albums ya' know, be able to go from Corned beef to Chicken and Ham Roll..... So please don't think there's anything other than extreme dissapointment on my behalf for the sheer hard work a lot of people put into recording and releasing "JOLLITY" and it not being recognised because of "Some idiots ineptitude". That is the fact. You may also say that my record was not good enough to be there and absolutely fine, that would be your totally entitled opinion but I have a sneaky feeling it may have been..... It's bloody good ya' know..... Thanks for listening and hey Mar, I hope the night is a huge success TW.x

If you like acts that sound like the Beach Boys, fine, just don't give out when people say, 'Hey that sounds like the Beach Boys'. If I want to listen to The Beach Boys, and I do sometimes, then I will listen to The Beach Boys. I won't listen to people who want to sound, and do, sound like the Beach Boys except without the brilliant songs. I hardly think Hal are a good example of a big successful act, a profile in the colour section of the Irish edition of the Sunday Times and a few plays on Tom Dunne's Pet Sounds (another Beach Boys reference, how cute) does not a mega sucessful act make. Massive record sales, songs that enter the popular imagination and stay there, and global popularity would be a better yardstick. To summarise: Beach Boys: World famous act, zillions of record sales, classic back catalog. Still popular after all these years Hal: Local Irish Beach Boys Pastiche Group, sold a few CDs, some people like them.

As any self respecting northsider who spent their teenage years in The Grove will tell you, Foxes Classic are THE SPAWN OF SATAN. The only refreshments available were said choco snack and Fanta. Mixed with tins of Stag cider consumed at considerable haste in the Anne's prior to entry, this volatile concoction played havoc with the auld ned kelly whilst moshing to She Sells Sanctuary. SPAWN OF SATAN I tells ya!

Firstly if you think hal are a Beach Boys rip off, i guess thats your opinion and i guess i just dont agree with you. I think one or two of the tracks on the album are not great "my eyes are sore" +another i cant think of, are a bit crap, a bit over the top. as for the rest its excellent and one of the best Irish albums I (i stress I) have heard in the last few years. to call it a beach boys rip off is i believe lazy (and i would differentiate between saying they sound at times like the beach boys, which is true and implying its nothing more than second rate beach boys). you obviously dont like the album or the band (fair enough) but in your attempt to put the band down you use typical lazy criticism, pick out a strong influence and label the band "a .... rip-off". they have far more influences than just the beach boys, beatles, ray davies, maybe carol king, also there is alot of originallity there. undoubtably, there is a strong 60's/70's influence, no bad thing i believe. i had two points about "Music snobs." firstly i would agree that the people writing on this forum are well informed, more well informed than me it appears. the focus of the site I feel, is generally on small bands with little commercial success. that is no bad thing, its good to draw attention to band that you believe are good but which need some publicity etc to gain some success and also passing on tips about small bands that are not well known. what is bad about being a music snob, is that some of these snobs take stock not in being well informed (which is obviously grand) but in knowing bands that other people know just for the sake of it. who can come up with the most obscure band? well thats super! heres a medal! also what really annoyes me is to see these same snobs turn their backs on a band because that band is succesful. when that happens, then its not the individual's band any more, its some heartless mulitnational with, god forbid, SHAREHOLDERS!and i really believe that that is the case on this site. when there was a topic re your first gig, which kinda turned into yr favourite gig, i thought it interseting to see how few people picked Paul mcCartney, granted hes a nob, but most people on this site i would speculate, never saw the beatles live? that was a chance to hear the beatles tracks performed live by one of the main songwriters of the greatest band ever. i mean no one even made reference to it.and to be honest it doesnt surprise me. did you even go? or can you admit being part of such a commecial money making venture, it could make you very uncool. lastly im not trying to negate another's opinion by saying they are not in a band or anything along those lines. what im saying is that its easy for those outside the music industry, and i include journalists (as outsiders), to look at the industry and criticise anyone who makes any concessions or compromises. as i said ambition is ugly.(why cant every act be like Nick Drake!!!) music has become a business. people do it because they enjoy it but also hoping to make a living from it. a good living. a nice house, holidays, no real financial worries. how many of us have comprimised to achieve those goals - in music that is selling out. (there are of course differing degrees of it. ) i think it is small minded to turn your back on a act because they are popular. we've all done it. when you were in school, you liked a band know one knew, then when the idiots who dont even like music started knowing the lyrics, you knew it was time to jump ship! come on be honest. and yes often the artist can go far too commercial and that is never nice to see/hear but in some ways i think the music snobs on this site really dislike anyone gaining any serious success (there exactly is the relevance of pointing out that many of these people are not reliant on making their living from making music). also given that we are no longer in school, its time to grow out of that. i think it also forms part of the irish psyche to knock those that are succesful. to come full circle, re Hal, it doesnt surprise me they get liitle recognition on this site, perhaps that is because they dont need it, or perhaps it is because if someone on this site said they were really good they wouldn't be able to claim they discovered them and hence there is little to be gained. yes i am a cynic. (ps not i dont think hal are "a big succesful act", they are reasonably succesful, and more succesful than most of the bands mentioned on this site, more succesful then most of those bands will ever be, which is perhaps where they went wrong)

For the record Hal haven't been ignored by CLUAS. Here's a review Gar wrote of them live back in 2004: http://www.cluas.com/music/gigs/hal.htm Granted there's been nothing much since then (except on the discussion board). But that's because nobody has submitted anything. If anyone - and that includes Mr. Super Nintendo Chalmers - wants to see more of a band featured on CLUAS then write a bloody review of an album or a gig of theirs, or try and do an interview with them. If I remember correctly this is a site where the content comes from its visitors. So don't complain about some act not being featured on the site as often as you think they deserve, go and do something about it. Anything well written and objective will be published to the site. Here's the page to submit your content: http://www.cluas.com/forms/submit_an_article.htm eoghan

i use them purely for illustrative purposes only. i feel you may have missed my point somewhat. also i certainly wasn't implying that the people running the forum were ignoring them or other similar bands (its merely coincidence that Rev Jules is a moderator and my discussion with him was in his capacity as a regular member. there was no personal comment made about Cluas or how it is run, more about some of the members who may or may not be representative of a majority.) for the record i had already read the review, i though it was grand.

On the point of music snobs, there is an interesting article on muso snobs in 'The Popes Children' by David McWilliams. Apparently, their fav album is 'Pet Sounds'. If you want snobbish in general, try surfing. It is a sport which attracts the best and the worst, and surf snobs are the worst.

A friend of mine, describes Van Morrisons 'Astel Weeks', as the Citizen Kane of Irish albums ... Everyone agrees its great & it rightfully tops most polls, but no one has actually heard it !!

I like McWilliams, he's an interesting guy and has a knack for getting complex ideas across simply but jesus, some of the archetypes that he concocted for that book are bordering on ridiculous.

this conversation is ridiculous. I'm beginning to think that people throw the music snob label around to mask their own insecurity at not 'knowing as much' as the person they label. Which is dumb. No one can possibly know as much as anyone, because information cannot be measured. I remember being on Dave Fanning's show on 2fm, where you pick a mixtape of sorts for him to play, I picked a few random things - an Arcade Fire track (the album hadn't come out here yet I don't think at that stage), The Honeymoon, a Nusrat cover by Jeff Buckley, and a couple of other things including a track by The Cult. Fanning was saying "there's so much 'cool' stuff here, and then you throw in a track by The Cult, what's that about?" I had no idea if The Cult were cool or not, because I kind of missed them the first time around. But I still stand by that being the most ridiculous thing anyone has ever said to me about music, and the true source of snobbery.

i'm with una - its just flaming music. You might like something, I might not like something else, who cares? its the ENTHUSIASM behind your choices. And hey, The Cult had some deadly tunes. I've been listening to that Julie Feeney album again on the back of all this stuff about the Choice Prize and I gotta say its very, very good. I might even put a few quid in her to win

Without wishing to drag up something that's pretty much blown over at this point some of you may recall a bit of correspondence on this site a number of weeks ago in relation to the Choice Awards. While I didn't intend to, nor believe that I did, in any way cast any doubts as to the integrity of the awards themselves or the people behind them, I have over the last number of days found out that one of the comments that I made was in fact incorrect. In that regard, I think it's only right that I put my hand up and say that I now understand from the parties concerned on my side that my album "Jollity" was in fact considered for the list, and I believe actually came very close to making the shortlist. So to that extent, I went off on one a little early and to all concerned, and particularly the Choice Awards organiser's I would like to record my apologies. As I say, and always have said, not liking my music is absolutely everybody's imperative as is liking it(!!) I just wanted to clear this up so that there's no misunderstanding or any feeling that I've tried to justify saying something that was wrong, although it was borne of genuine frustration and disappointment at the time. If I get something wrong, I am big enough to admit it. And I mean BIG ENOUGH!! That said, I'm going to the Choice Awards and look forward to hopefully meeting and congratulating some of the organisers and nominees on the night. TW.

does anyone know if ALL the acts are playing this? I know from a mate that the chalets can't cos they're supporting the bloody Kaiser Chiefs in Paris. But i'd like to see Hal (to see if they're any good), Cane 141 and this Julie Feeney one. nothing on the official website about it.

From last weeks Ticket; David Reid (co-ordinator of the Choice Music Prize) says that nine of the 10 shortlisted acts will be performing on the night. The only band missing will be The Chalets, who have the support slot at a Kaiser Chiefs gig in Paris that night. "We're just going to put the 12 panellists in a room on the night and wait for them to make their decision," he says. Reid expects a fair few international music-business types to attend the Vicar St show. He sees it as an ideal showcase for the selected bands and hopes that next year's event will be televised.
