But MCD are building it and thus their iron grip ever tightens lol From the Irish Times Music promoter Denis Desmond is developing plans for a EUR 100 million national arena in the greater Dublin area to accommodate up to 17,000 people, The Irish Times has learned. Arguing that the biggest acts favour a one-night, one-appearance approach to performing, Mr Desmond is understood to be saying that artists of international standing are no longer willing to perform a series of concerts in a single venue over several nights. Mr Desmond's company, MCD Productions, is understood to have approached a number of public bodies with his plan for an "international leisure event village". As well as the arena, the plans include a 600-room, three-star hotel and numerous restaurants and bars. Given the potential to use the arena as a tourist attraction in its own right, Mr Desmond's position is believed to be that the venue would be akin to a piece of national infrastructure. Some 40-50 acres of land are required for the plan and one of the four areas under examination is the Government-owned Abbotstown site in west Dublin, formerly earmarked for a defunct national stadium initiative. The others are: the former Irish Glass Bottle plant in Ringsend in the south city; a site off Oscar Traynor Road in Coolock in the north city; and a site at Balgaddy near Clondalkin, west Dublin. The owners of the Balgaddy site include South Dublin County Council and Treasury Holdings. Mr Desmond wants to enter a long-term commercial leasing or profit-sharing deal with a land-owner. Because the venue could host up to 180 events a year, it might involve the movement of some eight million people a year. For this reason, access to the public transport and road networks is crucial. While that would favour the Abbotstown and Balgaddy sites, Mr Desmond is understood to have looked seriously at the Ringsend and Coolock options.

All of the suggested sites aren't really great for travelling out to. A more central location would be better, but if it's a big village with restraunts and a hotel then it might be decent. Middlesbrough are currently applying for the same sort of thing over by the Riverside Stadium, but their main attraction is a super casino. This could be something that pops up in the MCD Village too......as long as bus routes, train/metro/luas, and cars can get there without being stuck in traffic for over an hour.

Well, if they're going to have one, Ringsend would be the most central. Would'nt fancy treking out to Blanch or Clondalkin.

yeah, like where are those places. eww. but seriously, why the f**k would anyone want to go see a band surrounded by that many people if it wasn't at a festival. The mind, it boggles.

i hope that if its public-owned land that is used for this monstrosity that the competition folks will make sure its not a MCD-only venue.

Basically it's like putting Marlay Park sized gigs indoors. Is there a market for 180 of these events a year? I assume that many events will probably be trade shows and conferences and not just gigs. Dublin does need a better option to the Point and the RDS Simmonscourt or Main Hall. This might be too large but something akin to the Odyssey in Belfast would be ideal. At least MCD are taking a sensible approach to the siting and transport links. The amphi-theatre venue down by the Point that was mentioned in another posting is supposed to be a new 1,200 capacity Vicar St.

The Odessy is an easy to get to, easy to leave venue in belfasts docklands, its has excellent sight and sound qualities, in otherwords, it aint the point which should be knocked down and rebuilt properly

I was actually taking the piss out of Off The Post's comments about 'treking' out to Blanch and Clondalkin. Anyway Blanchardstown is actually in West Dublin, not on the northside, thank you very much.

Blanch is northside. West Dublin is only referred to when writing about drugs, murders or rapes. Beside MCD owning it, the venue could be a good and may mean a few more bands might making the trip over to our shores.

Blanch residents still very much consider themselves Northsiders. And out of all of the locations mentioned, the Abbotstown one would be by far the worst. The Dublin bus routes going out that way are already jammed, the traffic is chaos at certain times and getting worse (with all of the apartment sites shooting up), and the proposed metro line didn't even stretch that far. So unless MCD have an agreement with the Minister For Transport about securing new access routes out to Blanchardstown, then the site at Abbotstown will once again be nothing but a rumour for a brand new state of the art building.
