The marketeer's 2007 love of the surfing image has jumped the shark with this limited edition, eh, Clio.

I can't imagine Renault Supremo and entrepreneur Bill Cullen being interested in the decidely non bling lifestyle of the average Irish surfer and he wouldn't be happy to hear that Renault is not a favoured brand of Irish wave riders, but it hasn't stopped Renault from bringing out a surf branded version of the Clio in association with RipCurl. I won't get all Jeremy Clarkson on this car but, lets just say, no self respecting surfer would be caught dead in one of these, although I had a Aussie mate who had to be physically restrained in a surf shop once from purchasing a pair of Billabong branded underpants, so addicted was he to buying anything with a surf brand logo on it. Even he would not part cash for this because surfers drive one of three types of automotive transport; station wagons, two seater commerical 4WDs and camper vans. I think the makers of the adverts for this car know it too as they focus on a pair of surf turkeys sitting in the car with their wetsuits on backward. I guess this car is aimed at the same people who have bought tickets for Cois Fharraige, non surfers who want to get a little of the surfer lifestyle. I have some advice for those guys (and girls). Instead of parting with your cash for something with a logo on it; simply get up at 5am with a splitting hangover, pull on some clothes you have left in the freezer overnight then get into a bath full of cold water with ice floating in it.

Re: Rip Curl Clio: A Car Too Far

For some reason this ad reminded me of the Batman episode where Batman and the Joker go surfing (a surf-off, if you will): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phTqQebUcPY

Ah dude, this isn't the first time a silly "special edition" car has been marketed on the strength of some daft stick on graphics and floormats. A quick list of daft branded special edition cars over the years: MTV Renault Clio, Rolling Stones VW Golf, Pink Floyd VW Golf, Bon Jovi VW Golf, Michael Schumacher Fiat Seicento, World Cup Fiat Panda (with wheel trims that looked like footballs), Gucci Caddilac Seville, etc. etc. - the list is endless. Not that there haven't been some good endorsments, like the BMW art cars, one of which was created by Andy Warhol. Sadly they are one offs and not for sale, but the lucky owner can be proud of the fact that they own one of the fastest pieces of art in the world.

"The marketeer's 2007 love of the surfing image"

...at least they may have gotten over the 2006 infatuation with the "snowboarding image"..

Re: Rip Curl Clio: A Car Too Far

I've just seen an ad on RTE for Denny sausages featuring surfers in Doolin. 'Nationwide', the round-the-country news programme, has featured surfing in each of its last two episodes. I presume, Jules, you've been offered your own TV show by now :D (speaking of surf ads, don't forget two oldies - one for 1970s Blue Stratos and the other for 1980s Guinness, the latter immortalised by Christy Moore in his song 'Delerium Tremens')

Regarding Dennys Sausages advert, I should point out that Denny put their money where their mouth is and did a sponsorship deal with the governing body of irish surfing for 2007 which is great news for the sport so, two thumbs up, you omitted to mention the famous Old Spice advert shot at Pipeline in Oahu, and also the great new one for guiness which features horses and old time hawaiian charges again in Oahu

Fair play to Denny (a Kerry company, of course!). I got my aftershaves mixed-up - I meant Old Spice, of course, the one with the chorus of 'O Fortuna', wasn't it?
